McConnell warns of Senate fight over abortion

By J. Taylor Rushing - 11/10/09 03:16 PM ET

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) on Tuesday issued a public warning of a coming Senate fight over abortion once the healthcare reform debate starts.

Speaking to reporters at a mid-afternoon press conference, McConnell suggested Republicans will fight hard for an amendment inserted into the House-passed healthcare bill last Saturday by Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) that would limit public funding for abortions under the bill. Asked if he had the necessary 41 votes to block the Senate's healthcare process, McConnell sidestepped the question but quickly brought up the Stupak amendment and said the GOP will introduce it in the Senate.

"I'm not sure we're yet able to predict the outcome of amendments we've not yet had. But I think the Stupak amendment and the concern about taxpayer funds not being used to pay for abortions is going to be a very important issue in the Senate as well," McConnell said."I expect there will be amendments in that area."

McConnell also referenced public comments by Democrat Ben Nelson of Nebraska and Independent Joe Lieberman of Connecticut that expressed skepticism about the Democrats' healthcare bill. Lieberman has said he opposes a public-option component to the bill, and Nelson has said he supports the Stupak amendment. McConnell also said Republicans will likely raise the issue of healthcare to illegal immigrants.

"No doubt, Senator Lieberman has indicated how important he feels about the issue of the government getting into the insurance business and how inappropriate that is. Other members feel strongly that we not somehow indirectly subsidize insurance for people who are not American citizens," he said. "These are all issues that will unfold on the Senate floor,"

The House vote of 220-215 last Saturday has put pressure on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to deliver a Senate version of a healthcare bill, either by the end of the year or early next year. Democratic leaders and aides say the Senate bill will likely be introduced next week.

McConnell really is a shining example for the Republican Party. He is both a shill for insurance corporations and a figurehead for the American Taliban aka the Christian Right fundamentalist nutjobs.BY Ethan on 11/10/2009 at 15:33
Ethan is an evil shill, bootlicking those who are destroying our freedom by attacking personally those who stand up for life, liberty and prosperity. He's a shining example of leftwing shilldom, which is to attack incessently all those who do good work in DC, while ignoring the criminals and bandits who are destroying America.BY Patrick on 11/10/2009 at 15:57
Patrick you are right about Ethan. He and others like him hate the traditions of America that made it great and he is totally for the corruption that will destroy the engine that produces wealth in this country. All the left wants is control and an ignorant population to control. It will be a country of mostly have nots with a few bureaucrats (the have's) throwing the have nots a bone every now and then. What happen to the statement by President Obama that the bill did not fund abortions or cover illegals. We found out that without the Stupak Admendment, the bill would have covered abortions. I am waiting to hear more about the illegal aliens not being covered, because the Democrat's the President stated that it would not cover illegals, yet would not allow legislation to be inserted that would specifically disallow illegals from receiving federal aid for insurance. Remember Joe Wilson's "You Lie" statement on the floor of the House. My bet is that he was right and I hope that there is a public debate by the Republicans concerning illegals being covered.BY ED on 11/10/2009 at 16:39
The three of you think your ideas about America are the only ideas about America. It's called Partisanship and it is the reason nothing gets done unless the nation is in the face/wake of tragedy.BY DJ on 11/11/2009 at 05:58
"Life, liberty and prosperity." Patrick you forgot Pursuit of Happiness. I assume you intentionally left the latter out. It appears your idea of those lofty words only apply to your values and the values of others don't matter. Who are those bandits in DC who are destroying our nation?BY Davy Crockett on 11/11/2009 at 09:51
Patrick and Ed if you really want the facts and don't have tome to read the actual bills, please go to factcheck.org. A 100% independent sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania. Non partisan…When in doubt get the facts!!BY Davy Crockett on 11/11/2009 at 10:07
