Obama to mark Vets Day with wreath-laying at Arlington

By Michael O'Brien - 11/10/09 06:00 PM ET

President Barack Obama will mark Wednesday's Veterans Day holiday with a wreath-laying and speech at Arlington National Cemetary.

The president will travel to the Virginia cemetary tomorrow, where he'll lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unkowns, the resting place for unknown veterans of World Wars I and II, as well as conflicts in Korea and Vietnam.

Obama will also deliver a speech at Arlington's ampitheater, where he'll be introduced by Veterans Secretary Eric Shinseki.

Earlier in the day, Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama will join Vice President Joe Biden and his wife for a Veterans Day breakfast at the White House.

After marking the federal holiday at Arlington, the president will later huddle with his national security team as part of Obama's ongoing process to decide how to proceed in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Participants will include Biden, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Admiral Mike Mullen, Gen. David Petraeus, and other members of the president's national security team.

Reports had swirled this morning that Obama had decided to, in fact, endorse Gen. Stanley McChrystal's recommendation for 40,000 more troops in Afghanistan, though the White House denied Tuesday that the president had made any final determinations of strategy.

This is a travesty. A Commander-in-Chief who never served himself in uniform going to Arlington for the annual ceremony honoring the sacrifices of America's veterans. If he wants to go in a private capacity, that's one thing, as a never-serving POTUS he lacks the moral authority to even touch the wreath. In this regard, the last President who had such legitimacy was George H. W. Bush, a distinguished WW II vet. A sad commentary indeed.BY Jeremiah on 11/10/2009 at 19:39
I'll try hard to miss the Laying of the Wreath on television. — I just can't get beyond the fact that our Rock Star President has given every indication he doesn't have a sincere, extemporaneous bone in his thin frame. — I wish that he and his "crew" and his traveling "cheering section" would go back to Chicago. — He embarrasses himself. — He just doesn't know it. — He's that much of a narcissist. —BY cme on 11/10/2009 at 19:56
I'll be there and can't wait to hear the President! God bless America.BY Christopher on 11/10/2009 at 22:05
While I can see how some may find it insulting that President Obama takes part in this ceremony. I personally would find it more insulting that the Commander in Chief of the US Armed Forces did not publicly honor the men and women of this country who have fought to defend our rights. Whether you like him or not is irrelevant. It is his DUTY to honor our nations veterans. I do however feel that he should be treating this as a HONOR we are giving him rather than a honor he is giving us.BY Bryan on 11/11/2009 at 09:24
I don't believe the kind of crap right wing morons of the palinic genre kind love to spew online. Utterly nonsense to say the least, with the kind of rhetorical hate from the tea party/Jim Crow nation below the Mason-Dixon line. People your time is up and your corporatist attitude and neo-conistic BS is out of sync with the American people.BY Gerald on 11/11/2009 at 10:39
I also found it very hard to watch Obana lay the wreath today. When I saw his wife laughing when she walked in, my heart sank. I agree with CME.BY vb on 11/11/2009 at 11:24
No kidding. Who the [***] is she to smile? After all, she is supposed to be one of the angry black women. Also, didn't Obama start two wars and sent American to their deaths while Bush went to Vietnan and Cheney did not get five deferments. Oh, and the country enjoyed double digits growth instead of bankruptcy under the republican administration. While it took Bush to double the national debt in just 8 years, Obama cannot fixed it in almost a year.BY Gerald on 11/11/2009 at 12:46
To all our fallen heros: THANK YOU!!To our CIC: America is counting on you and your team! Stop these wars that GW BUSH and his GOP started.BY connie on 11/11/2009 at 12:48
I really wish that we could put aside all our opinions for just one day to focus on what Veteran's Day is really about. It is just so important for people to take a moment today to honor the men and women who serve our country. I actually read today that Mental Health America is partnering with a company called Prescription Audio to donate $5M in sound therapy treatment for veterans. It was so nice to see that companies in these tough economic times are doing something to show their respect.BY MR on 11/11/2009 at 14:29

"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »

Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »

Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »

John Aravosis points out that Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) has dropped most of his unprecedented blanket hold on most of the White House's nominees -- except a few defense posts, which remain tied up as Shelby seeks two lucrative military contracts for his home state. Later, Aravosis reports that the Department of Health and Human Services has opened an investigation into the California Blue Cross health insurance program, following reports that premiums there have increased 39 percent recently.… Read More »
