Brown skips third straight House bid

By Aaron Blake - 11/10/09 07:36 PM ET

Democrat Charlie Brown will not be making a third-straight run in California's 4th congressional district, after accepting an appointment in the Department of Homeland Security.

The retired Air Force lieutenant colonel fell narrowly to now-Rep. Tom McClintock (R-Calif.) last year and Rep. John Doolittle (R-Calif.) before that. Many Democrats had hoped he would try again and put the seat in play.

From his e-mail to supporters:

It was one year ago that a record number of Americans stood together
to take our community, and our country in a new direction.

There is no denying the important strides we've made. But it is also
clear that very significant challenges remain, both at home and
abroad. Everyone can and must play a role to help get our country
back on track.

In that same spirit, I have accepted an appointment from the Obama
Administration and will soon begin a new job at the U.S. Department
of Homeland Security in Washington D.C.

Brown also used the e-mail to announce his support for several Democratic candidates, including Rep. John Garamendi (D-Calif.), the former lieutenant governor who was elected last week to the state's 10th district congressional seat, and Francine Busby, another multiple-time congressional candidate running in a contested primary for Rep. Brian Bilbray's (R-Calif.) seat.

Why does obama always pick losers and this time a 3 timer. What a loser this adminstration is?BY jake2 on 11/10/2009 at 22:36
He's a clown, that Charlie Brown.BY Bruce on 11/10/2009 at 23:07
I know Charlie. He and another pilot, Chuck Greer, flew their helicopter into almost certain destruction on May 15th of 1975 in the Mayaguez Operation. They were asked to evacuate some wounded Marines. They landed under fire, waited for the Marines to board and stayed there, shooting it out with the Cambodians in a short range gunfight. A Marine officer decided not to board the wounded because he thought the aircraft was "shot down in place" and would not save his troops. When convincedd the wounded would not come aboard, Charlie and crew took off again with pieces falling off the helicopter and fire erupting from one blown open fuel tank.Charlie's no clown.BY Richard Comer on 11/11/2009 at 02:16
Only a wing nut Republican would call a respected retired Air Force Lieutenan Colonel a loser and a clown. This man ran close races twice in a strong Republican district. These right wing Republican nuts have nothing.but venom for President Barack Obama. The party of NO has no solution for America's problem. They also have no shame for their hatred.Ray CBY Ray Cohn on 11/11/2009 at 07:48

"Fiscal conservative" Charlie Brown leaves the corrupt GOP to join the corrupt tax and spend progressive party. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. He jumps on corruption but makes sure he doesn't offend Pelosi, the San Francisco treat. He thinks progressive corruption is okay. Pelosi knows how to use taxpayers' money to help hubbie out. Another thing, let's leave out the war hero thing. We're talking politics, not war records. Murtha and Kerry should be given a free pass to step on us because of their war records? I don't think so. The progressives are an enemy of free enterprise and of our Constitution.BY Bruce on 11/11/2009 at 16:39
Bruce, your ideological rants showing how shallow they are when you have to resort to characterizing "progressives are an enemy of free enterprise and of our Constitution." I'm curious as to why you're so sensitive about the "war hero thing" and particularly about whether you are a veteran yourself. I can't believe that you are a veteran who has actually spent time in an armed forces uniform serving our country. No self-respecting veteran would castigate the "war hero thing." But everyone's background is part of their history and how their principles and personal characteristics were nurtured. I am a registered Independent but your vewpoints spin into the ground … I have to feel sorry for conservatives who have to claim you as one of them. BudBY Bud Lee on 11/13/2009 at 19:15
