DCCC suggests Bachmann's 'House Call' violated House rules

By Tony Romm - 11/11/09 12:52 PM ET

Democratic strategists on Wednesday suggested Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) had violated House rules by advertising last week's heathcare "House Call" on her official congressional Web site.

According to chamber guidelines, lawmakers' Web pages "may not include grassroots lobbying or solicit support for a Member's position" -- a requirement the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee said Bachmann had clearly violated.

“Michele Bachmann’s misuse of taxpayer dollars and disregard for House rules is further proof that she is willing to do whatever it takes to promote her extreme right wing agenda," a DCCC spokesman said in a statement Wednesday.

"Minnesota's families need real solutions, Michele Bachmann is dedicated to the status quo and using taxpayer dollars to support big insurance companies," he added.

Bachmann's office, however, is mostly steering clear of the insinuations. Her spokeswoman previously told reporters the Minnesota Republican's Web site merely "encourages the American people to exercise their right to petition" -- hinting that the congresswoman's advertisements were within the confines of House rules.

Bachmann's press secretary, however, was unavailable for further comment.

Ok, so exactly what are the rules? Has reporting really come to this, and in The Hill no less? They said, she said, but no real facts? Trying out for a Politico gig? Wasting my time here obviously.BY Cathy in Texas on 11/11/2009 at 13:30

How would the DCCC characterize the document prominently displayed on the House web page of Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL) titled, "Annual Deaths In Congressional Districts Due To Lack Of Health Care”?BY Chris Baker on 11/11/2009 at 14:55
Are they serious?A Congresswoman cannot encourage the American people to express their opinions to their own government on her government provided website given to her for the purpose of representing the people?I support using government funds in ways that help the people of America. Promoting real communication between Washington and the American people is a good thing.BY Ruth on 11/11/2009 at 15:14
Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL) also prominently displays a link on his House web page to a virtual public forum hosted by Google titled, "Help Rep. Grayson find fraud." The DCCC should explain to us how the speech in this virtual public forum differs from the type of speech advocated by Rep. Mic[***]e Bachman on her House web pages. For example one of the comments posted in this virtual forum includes, "Go, Alan Grayson! This is your forte!" Another says, "I want this to pushed with the same scrutiny Fox News used to expose ACORN." Yet another says, "the GOP should not receive another federal dime when they place a presidential candidate to run in the next election, along with whatever other federal funds they rake in."BY Chris Baker on 11/11/2009 at 15:34
Somebody, please tell me how ENCOURAGING AMERICAN CITIZENS TO EXERCISE THEIR RIGHTS TO FREE SPEECH AND ASSEMBLY is a misuse of taxpayers dollars?BY Wendy from New York on 11/11/2009 at 15:57
I would guess pelosi and the whoremungus obamacare violated the CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND ALL WHO VOTED FOR IT SHOULD BE BROUGHT UP ON ETHNICS VIOLATION AND PURGED FROM THE CONGRESS.,BY jake2 on 11/11/2009 at 16:06
"According to chamber guidelines, lawmakers' Web pages 'may not include grassroots lobbying or solicit support for a Member's position' — a requirement the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee said Bachmann had clearly violated."Oh, so DCCC is now concerned about house rules? What's the punch line to that joke? Only when it suits DNCC's purposes? You can tell you're making progress when the other side starts whining about "rules" they usually ignore. How many more day until Americans get to vote again?BY Thomas Jefferson on 11/11/2009 at 16:53
Good for Mic[***]e Bachman for encouraging Americans to exercise the rights given to us in our constitution. I hope she can stay strong because conservative women get majorly trashed from the liberal lefties.BY Patricia - Minnesota on 11/11/2009 at 17:40
let me see if I have this right: Michele Bachmann used her website to let her constituents know about a rally where they would get together with other like-minded citizens and speak out to protect what rights they have left. The website is funded by those citizens' dollars, and she is using it to bring those citizens together for the purpose of a common interest, as requested by her constituents. So in essence, she is doing something FOR the people, involving WE the people, in the best interest OF her people. Question #1:Does any congressman promote people getting out, to drive support for this Government-Run Healthcare, on their official congressional website?Question #2Was it within the "rules" for the Oboma to spend taxpayer dollars (transportation , secret service, etc) to go to NJ several times and VA to promote the Dems in the recent governor races?BY Liz - Tennessee on 11/12/2009 at 10:15

"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »

Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »

Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »
