Brookings fellow fires back at Rahm

By Eric Zimmermann - 11/11/09 01:30 PM ET

A Brookings Institution fellow fired back at Rahm Emanuel today after Emanuel took a shot at the left-of-center think tank.

Yesterday, Emanuel was quoted in the NY Times pushing back against liberal critics who think Democrats have watered down healthcare reform too much.

"The goal isn’t to see whether I can pass this through the executive board of the Brookings Institution," Emanuel quippd. "I’m passing it through the United States Congress with people who represent constituents.”

Today, William Galston, a senior fellow at Brookings (the Ezra K. Zihka Chair in Governance Studies, to be exact) penned a testy response to the White House Chief of Staff.

In a post on TNR's The Plank, entitled "A Word on Behalf of the 'Executive Board of the Brookings Institution,'" Galston suggested the White House has failed to lead on healthcare.

"Dear Rahm," Galston began. "It may surprise you to learn that many of us here at Brookings like politics as much as you do, and some of us even know something about it."

He continued:

Yes, politics is the art of the possible. But leadership is the art of expanding the possible. Leadership without politics is futile. But politics without leadership is blind.

[...]

It’s time for the White House to step in and speak out. That means publicly specifying the essential elements of meaningful health care cost containment. And it means insisting that they are included both in the Senate bill and in the conference report. I think you know what they are. If not, call Peter Orszag.

A liberal beating up a liberal we think. Health care cost containment means for the left to raise it on the middle class and contain it for the lower class. So let's see. You Mr., Mrs., Ms., and Miss of the hardworking middle class of America are getting the nubs put to you no matter what. Keep believing in that Change you voted for out there and also keep repeating, I love Obama, and health care and cap and trade and debt and loss of the dollar and the clunkers and Government Motors and on and on and on. Can't wait until he signs over the military and our sovereignty to the UN. Such fools are we to allow them to call us angry tea party participants. A guy who never had sex with that woman and one who will sell this Country for less than thirty pieces of silver.BY Maureen on 11/11/2009 at 15:03
All of these so called "Think Tanks" need to be gotten rid of. The american voters VOTE for candidates that can think in accordance to their constituents not for what some "Think Tanks" say would be best for the american citizens. Want an example of a think tank that has publicized their intent of encouraging the breakup of our nations sovereignty? The council on foreign relations,Trila teral commission,Bild erberg group all believe that America should be subserviant to a world president. This sounds and is treasonous to many fellow american citizens who wish to have free trade and good relations with other countries without giving away our sovereign Constitution of the United States of America. There is a problem though and it is that all presidents and their administrations are members starting with both Clintons, GHWB,GWB,Obama, Mic[***]e Obama etc… Where are the american citizens to call foul on this malignant agenda? These same people are the authors of conspiratorial treachery as they indeed do conspire to show you "Change" that they are going to incrementally force and seize upon american citizens all in the name of "for the public good." Americans these lobbying "Think Tanks" need to be the next ones to be booted out of our lives forever as the policy of preemptive nationbuilding wars was yet another one of their terrific ideas! The next agenda for americans has been duly noted.BY Annie on 11/11/2009 at 15:08
deadfish you are a liar just like obama. These Congressman didn't vote the way their constitutents wanted and thought but responded to this illegal obamacare bill and voted under duress and threats of deadfish, bogus bama and pelosi. I've been around over 60 years and people that use their illgotten gains pay one day for their ruthless actions. All the constitutents can do is watch when this unfolds and say deadfish you wasn't quite as smart as you thought you were. This is no threat from me but I will keep praying the terrorists are taken out as we don't seem to have an adminstration that wants to protect the citizens/voters/taxpayers of the United States of America.God Bless America and let the polices of obama and deadfish fail.BY jake2 on 11/11/2009 at 16:03
Let me chime in here,Deadfish—Bullying and trash talk is no substitute for competency. I hope by now you may be getting a clue that you are MAKING MORE ENEMIES FOR THE PRESIDENT THAN HE ORDINARILY MAY HAVE HAD.You come across as a novice who thinks that slamming people upside the head actually gets you anywhere. You are the opposition's dream. Not only do you make enemies of people on the fence, but you actually manage to turn people on your side, away in disgust. Please get some political counseling. You are killing this administration.Great team, Hopeychange.BY tropicgirl on 11/11/2009 at 18:39

Drudge Report
Bannered across Drudge this morning is a question most of us in the Beltway have asked about the snow storm Friday: "When will it stop?" Below, Drudge links to an AP article on the recent trouble facing New York Gov. David Paterson (D), who many thought was about to be rocked by political scandal by a forthcoming story in The New York Times. That story hasn't arrived -- but speculation about its contents surely has -- leading Paterson to say he would depart office only as a result of the ballot box, or if he's carried out "in a box."… Read More »
The Huffington Post
"KEEP TRYING" -- That's the message one HuffPo writer took from the latest WaPo/ABC poll, which showed 63 percent of Americans still favored further action on healthcare reform. Additionally, Ryan Grim posts his recent interview with Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.), who predicted his chamber's historic filibuster could "fall of its own weight -- it should fall of its own weight -- or it will fall after some massive conflict on the floor, which has happened in the past where there have been rulings from the chair that have led to reform."… Read More »
The Corner
The Corner's Mark Krikorian points out in a recent post that the private sector -- namely, the National Review -- was able to devise how many immigrants were residing within the United States faster than the U.S. government could produce that data. And offering further proof that former Gov. Sarah Palin's (R-Alaska) crib notes have become something of a political meme is Kathryn Jean Lopez, who notices a famous country singer penning notes on his hand.… Read More »
The Washington Independent
"The story of coals dirty, deadly legacy" headlines The Washington Independent this morning. The story relates the political significance, health effects and community impacts of a fossil fuel that reporter Mike Lillis believes has White House's clear embrace.Earlier, Lillis looked at one element of Democrats' forthcoming jobs bill: A proposed unemployment insurance extension. The bill offers jobless Americans an additional three months of aid -- less than what the White House's budget requests, but on par with the House's extention, passed late last year.… Read More »
Red State
Michael Steele's remark this week -- that he has been subject to intense criticism because of his race -- has earned the scorn of Red State's Eric Erickson, who lambasts the Republican National Committee chairman in a blog post published late Tuesday. "Actually, it could have nothing to do with race and everything to do with outsourcing the RNC to the same consultants who have been bleeding the RNC dry for years," he says of Steele's low popularity. "It could have something to do with management styles. It could have everything to do with the Chairman never meeting a shoe he didn’t want to eat."… Read More »
MyDD
Jonathan Singer on Wednesday explores the current state of President Barack Obama's judicial nominations. But with the help of Slate's Doug Kendall, he finds that the president has both nominated fewer and confirmed fewer judges to federal benches than his predecessor at this point in his presidency. Concludes Singer: "But with a real crisis in the judiciary in the form of dozens of vacancies, one has to wonder why this President has nominated fewer than half of the judges nominated by his predecessor."… Read More »
