Blue Dog who opposed health bill calls Pelosi 'misunderstood'

By Jordan Fabian - 11/11/09 02:55 PM ET

A Blue Dog Democrat on Wednesday came to the defense of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), saying that "she's the most misunderstood person in Washington."

Rep. Heath Shuler (D-N.C.) made his remarks after Pelosi allowed the Stupak abortion amendment into the House's healthcare bill. 64 Democrats, including Shuler, supported the amendment that barred federal dollars from funding abortions under the public healthcare plan.

The former NFL quarterback joined 22 other anti-abortion rights Democrats who voted for the Stupak language but against healthcare reform bill.

Pelosi has faced flack from centrist and conservative members of the Democratic caucus during the process of bringing healthcare to the floor, as well as Republicans who oppose her legislative agenda.

But after she decided to allow the abortion language authored by Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.), liberal Democrats vowed to vote against the measure if the bill emerges from conference with it included. Many now view the inclusion of the amendment as a key in securing the necessary votes from centrist to conservative Democrats to pass the bill.

Shuler made his comments at a North Carolina private school in a speech to students, according to the Asheville Citizen-Times.

"She’s very misunderstood," he said. "She’s a devout Catholic. Don’t get in a Bible discussion with her."

Shuler said he met with Pelosi during his first term and requested that she not ask him to vote against his constituency. He said she has not pressured him to vote in such a way.

"She's held true to that promise," he said.

She's a devout Catholic#? She must have her own interpretation of Catholism if she supports abortion. She's like Bill Clinton who said " depends what your definition of is" is. She has her own definition of abortion and the church so whe can satisfy herself.BY Georgie Girl on 11/11/2009 at 16:27
Many american people understand Mrs. Pelosi and her agenda quite clearly. Mrs. Pelosi has decided that she is going to forcefully and unconstitutiona lly mandate and demand americans adhere to her healthcare plans. If a free and independent american citizen doesn't follow suit, she will then along with president Obama call them names for example:" Anti-government right wing extremists"(Obama just gave a speech to the dems stating this exactly in order to sway some holdouts to clear way for the healthcare bill votes). I completely understood Mrs. Pelosi and her intentions for americans while researching and reading the healthcare bill. As an independent american citizen I read that I indeed would be fined and could be fined up to $250,000 not to forget to mention be penalized also with being a felon to be sent to prison for 5 yrs if I resist and donot buy into this completely unconstitutiona l use of force healthcare plan. Our government inprisons more people than any other country, the prison industry is booming here in the USA. What an industrial nation huh? I would like to reiterate for the record Mrs. Pelosi that many americans have heard you loud and clear and we donot buy into you nor president Obamas police state mandates. You both need to reread and understand the U.S. Constitution and comprehend the exact intent that americas forefathers had in mind when writing it as elloquently as they did. It was their way of protecting American citizens rights to remain free and sovereign peoples. I will repeat that the U.S. constitution was meant as a reminder to oligarchy usurpers in seats of power that men/womens natural birthright is to remain free. Many americans have objectively witnessed your undemocratic verbage and actions through the use of force and intimidation tactics. I can tell you that americans nor any other peoples both free and bond, take the use of threats and intimidation very kindly. It appears that what most of your Obamacare plan comes down to is a conduit for complete control over the american peoples rights to freedom and liberty. These rights cannot be given by president Obama, or Mrs. Pelosi or anyone in government. These rights are natural inalienable rights given to us by God above from cradle to grave. It is ridiculous that any government would validate itself able to take away the very rights that they had not been given authority to give nor take away in the first place. Heath Shuler probably means that Nancy Pelosi fully appreciates the sentiments of the more conservative members of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops who were strongly backing the Stupak amendment, and who could be influential with Catholic senators like Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Mary Landrieu (D-LA).BY Chris Baker on 11/11/2009 at 18:47
Schuler seems to be the one that misunderstands Pelosi. I hope he gains a clearer picture when he explains to his daughter that it was "poor misunderstood Pelosi" that robbed her of any financial security for the rest of her life.BY Brae of Va on 11/11/2009 at 18:57

Sounds like Shuler isn't any better at reading people than he was at reading NFL defenses.BY mrt on 11/12/2009 at 08:07
It's good to see someone tell the truth about Pelosi. She's doing a great job.BY andreams on 11/12/2009 at 11:02

"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. "Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »

Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »

Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »
