Obama ordering review of intel prior to attack at Fort Hood base

By Michael O'Brien - 11/12/09 12:45 PM ET

President Barack Obama released a memo to key agency heads, ordering an immediate review of files the U.S. government had on the alleged Ft. Hood shooter.

In a memorandum to Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair, and FBI Robert Mueller to review the inventory of files they had on Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan prior to his alleged Nov. 6 shooting at the military base in Texas.

The preliminary results of the review will be presented to Obama's assistant for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism, John Brennen, by the end of this month.

The memorandum comes as questions have been raised in the media over the existing warning signs about Hasan's activities prior to the shooting, including having reportedly tried to contact members of al-Qaeda before the shooting.

"I directed an immediate review be initiated to determine how any such intelligence was handled, shared, and acted upon within individual departments and agencies and what intelligence was shared with others," Obama wrote to the directors.

The president said that the review would be conducted in a way so as to not interfere with the concurrent criminal investigation into Hasan's actions in the case.

As long as nobody's feelings are hurt!BY Reality Check on 11/12/2009 at 16:17
On top of it all, he seems to be pushing for the deaths of even more US soldiers in Afghanistan (and further demoralizing our troops) by refusing to do anything to either win in or remove our troops. Obama is also, more and more of late, praising his Muslim religion and those who practice it. After Islamic jihadist (and of all things a US Army officer) Nidal Malik Hasan summarily slaughtered 13 soldiers, wounded 38 more and yelled Allahu Akbar (meaning BY larry on 11/12/2009 at 16:55
Too little, too late barry! Ordering a review,, big deal, Something should have been done to prevent it. Especially on a military installation. It's bad enough that this oddministration is making us the laughing stock of the world powers, now you are tearing our bases apart from the inside and not demanding to know who knew what and when they knew it. Any official that was privy to this information ahead of time should be court-martialed immediately!BY kdpvegas on 11/12/2009 at 18:51
Our priority has to be to lay bare who knew what when and why it was not communicated and acted upon. After 9/11 the FBI/CIA walls were shredded but it would appear there are some institutional cultures which need fixing. Perhaps we need a terrorist hot tip line or some such in each agency or for the public. The traitor will be brought to trial. That is not the priority. Fixing what went wrong; how so many 5-star red signals were missed such as communicating with a radical Iman, needs attention immediately. Someone wake up Obama, Holder, and Napalitano, Casey and crew.BY graham on 11/12/2009 at 19:24
How many more deaths will it take for everyone to wake up start monitoring the mosques, prisons everywhere else these supposed religious moslems congregrate to spew hatred death in our country. Why don't they all go back to the Arab countries live there. Saudi Arabia has enough place. Who needs them here. The US should stop all muslims from coming to our country. Barack Hussein Obama, you are on your way out, too, nobody will re-elect you.BY Ellen on 11/13/2009 at 12:10
I noticed that Obama immediately suggested that we shouldn't jump to any conclusions after Hasan shot up Fort Hood, even though we were given plenty of information by the media to make some pretty clear assumptions. Remember how quick he called the cops actions "Stupid", after the "break-in' incident? and he knew nothing about those circumstances.BY carolee on 11/13/2009 at 13:03

Every day President Obama reveals more of his inability to lead this country to the favor if it citizens. I would love to give him the benefit of the doubt, but I am afraid the damage he is doing may be unrepairable. He has had one failure after another thus far. Unemployment in excess of 10%, Indecisive about troop levels in Afghanistan, Attempting to pass a health care bill that most of the American people think will hurt them and the country. Pray God saves us from this president and congress.BY pippoproducts on 11/14/2009 at 06:51

"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »

Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »

Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »
