DeGette warns leaders: Don't mess with Pro-Choice Caucus

By Michael O'Brien - 11/14/09 03:36 PM ET

The leader of abortion rights supporters in the House warned leaders not to mess with her caucus when it comes to the Stupak amendment.

Rep. Diania DeGette (D-Colo.) warned that the 40 members of the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus should be taken seriously in their threat to vote against a health reform bill containing language from Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) restricting federal funding for abortion.

"So what I would say is I don't think people should mess with this one," she said in an interview with the liberal blog Open Left.

Nearly all House Democratic leaders have backed removing the Stupak amendment during conference with Senate health legislation, though if the Senate were to include similar language in its bill, it could make removing such language more difficult during the conference process.

DeGette said that abortion rights supporters in the House are furious at the amendment, and said they take their threat even more seriously than House liberals' threat to vote against a bill without a robust public option -- a threat which was eventually broken.

"I guess I would say we're really furious here," DeGette said. "I didn't sign any of these other letters, even though I supported the robust public option, and I would have voted for single payer Amendment, and all of that. That's not fundamental to me like this is."

I'm sure she is not near as angry as the taxpayers are for having this make believe health care reform mess ramed down our throats.BY bailedout on 11/14/2009 at 20:04

If pelosi and obama Mom believed in abortion we would have these incompetents in office. Just a thought.BY Jake2 on 11/15/2009 at 01:05
@ Jake2 Dear Jake2, I have to confess, I am an ardent fan of yours. Everytime I click on an article on TheHill my first move is into the comment section where I always hope to find (and in case so very much enjoy) your profound insights. Your comments are treasures of knowledge and understanding, true examples of learning, education and decent demeanour. Every analysis of yours is astounding! My God, why is it that such an expert on healt-care and other domestic issues is so grossly overlooked? Can this nation, America the Beautiful, really afford to ignore such a competent scholar, an expert on every topic of the political spectrum? You really should have a job in one of our top think-tanks — we need your expertise dearly. Please post as much as possible, fountain of wisdom.BY boing on 11/15/2009 at 15:20
First - ka-BOING go find another venue for your petty complaints. —- Jake's been around awhile and has "jurisdiction" here, so get lost.——————————————Second, I assume none of these Congressional Representatives ever took the time to view an ultra-sound of a baby at 2 months or 3 months or 6 months or whenever. —- These are probably the same who are screaming about saving the Delta Smelt. —- These people are irrational. ———————————————- As I've said before, "Honey, if you want an abortion, you pay for it. —- Go sell your jewelry or your Manolo Blahniks or quit snorting and save your money". ——————————————- "You do what you want, but don't come to me, Ms. TaxPayer, and expect me to pay for your bad choices. —- You made your bed, now YOU pay for it".BY cme on 11/16/2009 at 01:49
CME, what joy, to have you throwing your hat into the ring in this contest of best-informed, most, eloquent commenter. Just a little jealous of Jake, are we? No such thing as jurisdiction or seniority in cyberspace, lovie. Terrible place for control freaks to try to get their freak on. All this talk about women not accepting your control must be so terribly upsetting for you. Take this one from Mama: reality always wins. Girls are different from boys, we get pregnant, abortion happens, and we're not going to a back alley to get one. We're going to get them where we get the rest of our medical care, and we're going to insist that they be paid for like the rest of our medical care, including for our poor sisters. You'll get over it. In a democracy, we all end up paying for some of what we don't like. If it makes you feel better, you can imagine HER taxes (oh, by the way, women pay taxes…) are paying for her abortion. 'K? Oh, and while we're at it, let's pay for true universal single payer health care, mandatory extended paid maternity leave high-quality federally subsidized childcare and take the caps off welfare, and maybe she'll be able to keep it.BY NYB on 11/16/2009 at 02:09
Oh, NYB, now put down the knife and step carefully away from the ledge.- I'm trying to be cool here like Ohrbach always was on "Law and Order". —- "Now put down the gun", etc, etc. —- Sweetiekins, apparently no one ever told you that a baby (pregnancy) is NOT AN ILLNESS or DISEASE.—- It's the most natural part of life. —- If you and your "poor sisters" choose to abort, that's your choice. —- I will not stop you, but NEITHER WILL I PAY for your bad choices and your "rolls in the hay". —- Don't ever be so dense as to try to present a "MORAL" argument in favor of the taxpayers of this country paying for your stupidity and selfishness.—- Babies are a national treasure. —- How many pregnant women have been murdered for their unborn babies, cut from the uterus? —- NYB, think about that horror and the unspeakable horror of "late term abortions". —- Find out what that phrase means. —- Stop being the "political" animal and try being human for once.BY cme on 11/16/2009 at 03:01

Drudge Report
"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »

Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »

Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »

John Aravosis points out that Sen.
