Sarah Palin accuses the AP of doing 'opposition research' in fact check

By Michael O'Brien - 11/15/09 09:40 AM ET

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) went after the Associated Press on Sunday, accusing them of engaging in "opposition research" in fact-checking her forthcoming book.

Palin blasted the AP's fact check of her new book, "Going Rogue," which says the former governor had gone rogue with some of the facts.

"Amazingly, but not surprisingly, the AP somehow nabbed a copy of the book before it was released," Palin wrote on her Facebook page. "They're now erroneously reporting on the book's contents and are repeating many of the same things they spewed during the campaign and afterwards."

"We've heard 11 writers are engaged in this opposition research, er, 'fact checking' research!" Palin continued. "Imagine that – 11 AP reporters dedicating time and resources to tearing up the book, instead of using the time and resources to "fact check" what's going on with Sheik Mohammed's trial, Pelosi's health care takeover costs, Hassan's associations, etc."

The AP fact check said, among other things, that Palin's book at times misrepresents her record as a governor and GOP vice presidential candidate. Among the elements of the fact check, released Friday, were reports that Palin was not exactly frugal as a traveler while governor, that she did not raise money from small donors as she'd written, and that she had opposed the government bailouts for the financial industry during the height of the campaign.

Palin has long made a habit of blasting the media for what she claims have been unfair or erroneous reports. She directed readers to what she said was a more accurate portrayal of her book at a website run by her conservative supporters.

"As always, they did a great job holding some of the media accountable for spreading more misinformation and for making things up," she said.

The Associated Press employs roughly 4,100 journalists around the globe.

Your own bias is evident. The AP 'said' and Palin 'claims'. Words, just words.BY Doris on 11/15/2009 at 10:21
This not the first time by a long shot that the AP has been caught in a lie and it will not be the last time either.BY Bob on 11/15/2009 at 10:47
Three percent of the AP's global workforce was assigned to read Mrs. Palin's book. That's a lot of attention for a private citizen.BY thighsofglory on 11/15/2009 at 10:51
It is astounding how threatened the establishment politicians and media have been by Sarah Palin from the beginning. The footprints of the "powers that be" that rule the media are so ridiculously obvious by their behavior: Neutralize people that might actually be effective on the right by either (1) pretending they don't exist (Ron Paul) or if that is impossible, (2) character assassination (Sarah Palin). Then elevate anyone that will be no threat whatsoever (John McCain).BY GracieZG on 11/15/2009 at 10:54
I myself FWIW's would bank on Ms.Palins word before the now leftist AP .BY TST on 11/15/2009 at 10:55
Adding to the inherent bias in this lame article: the reference to "her conservative reporters." If Michael O' Brien wasn't one of the Dems' reliable hand maidens, he'd be writing about the evident flaws already found in the AP's supposed fact checking.BY WHOEVER on 11/15/2009 at 11:02

Speaking of factchecking: That's 0.3 percent or 3/1000s of of AP's journalists, THIGHSOFGLORY, not 3 percent. Why doesn't Ms. Palin address the specific errors (or counter the claims that they are errors), rather than attack the messenger?BY Ken Edelstein on 11/15/2009 at 11:52
It is incredible that the AP would devote so much time and energy into tearing down her book. I read their report and many of their so-called "facts" are specious. What a bunch of partisan hacks; gone from news organization to tabloid press.BY cecil91 on 11/15/2009 at 11:55

"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »

Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »

Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »
