Reid promises 'best' health bill yet

By Eric Zimmermann - 11/17/09 03:33 PM ET

Majority Leader Harry Reid seems pretty confident that he's crafted a winning healthcare bill.

Though final legislative language hasn't been revealed yet, Reid told reporters today that his legislation will be the best yet.

"Of all the bills we've seen, it'll be the best," Reid said. "Saves more money, is more protective of Medicare, is a bill that's good for the American people."

He added confidently: "I think if you're not impressed, you should be."

Democrats are waiting on a score from the Congressional Budget Office, which may be out as soon as this afternoon.

Woo hoo I can hardly wait. No matter what they do everything they come up with is gonna cost too much money, make private companies go out of business, and eventually cause our health care to be rationed. All this so our government can take over 1/6th of our economy. That would make government own over 40% of this country buisness. Socialized medicine will be the death of our wonderful health care and country as we know it.No thank you!BY Joan on 11/17/2009 at 15:50
I got an idea…Since I have to pass a drug test to stay employed and pay taxes, everyone who "qualifies" for any of the liberal entitlement programs, such as Medicaid, welfare, etc. should have to pass a drug test to receive my tax money. The states/federal government would either save alot of tax payers money or it would be a great drug prevention measure. Seems only fair. I'll work, you sit at home…you just can't get stoned while you are cashing my check!BY RT on 11/17/2009 at 16:01
Harry Reid is a gross moron—that is, he's 144 times dumber than a regular one. Does he honestly think ANYONE believes him?BY 2Confused on 11/17/2009 at 16:08
Uh—- RT—- you wanna give Granny a piss test? You sure that's the conservative platform you want to run on?BY Honest Abe on 11/17/2009 at 16:08
reid(can't read) I heard you on RH talk show and you out right lied and you are lying now. You are no better then obama, down in the gutter with your lies.BY jake2 on 11/17/2009 at 16:09
We don't want your freakin healthcare reid, it is a fraud.BY jake2 on 11/17/2009 at 16:09
anyone see the associated press or good morning america this morning? the fed, gov.s panel(which was appointed from the stimulas bill) said the feds are telling women no mamagram needed till age 50 and self exams are useless. hows that for rationed healthcare, this is how they are going to save money, by killing women, the american cancer society does not follow this and still says at age 40 and to self examin, i hope no one here who is for the healthcare bill gets cancer before age 50, if the bill passes, insurance or gov.plan will not pay for mamagrams. the feds are doing the same as the uk, but so far, if a woman in the uk does not have advanced stage of cancer then they are treated. if you wait till 50 and get a mamagram, and it is in the advanced stage, you are not treated, it cost too much, isthis the healthcare you want? most breast cancers are caught in the 40s or younger. this is only the beginning of rationed healthcare, hope all of you who support this bill dont get cancer, or your kids or sisters until they get atleast 50. think about it, you cannot dispute this one or blame bush for it. its all on obama and reids and pelosis head if women die of breast cancer by doing this.BY cargo65 on 11/17/2009 at 16:11
Of course, what we REALLY want is the Republican Health Care bill. Because their rabid giveaways to Wall Street De-regulation over the past 10 years are the prime factors to consider when determining that we should just give ALLL of our money to Humana and Pfiser and Blue Cross, so that they can tell us what they will cover and what's not worthwhile to their shareholders to cover—- when we should live, when we should die. You know—- America! Not CommieCommie land! YAAAAY!BY Jakey2 on 11/17/2009 at 16:22
Congratulations Senator Reid! Can't wait to see it. The country needs a great bill and I am sure that you nailed it. This has been and will be a tough battle, because of the party of NO, THE WING NUTS AND TEA BAGGERS, but I believe in You, Senator Harry Reid! We, as Americans deserve a great health care bill with a good public option. This country deserves more than we are getting, but we realize that the obstructionists on the other side of the aisle, want nothing for the American people, but rather, want their sugar daddy big business pimps to get all that they(pimps) want! ! !BY metrohandyman on 11/17/2009 at 16:22
Cargo—— What. On Earth. Are you talking about? Whose insurance plan does this affect? Humana? Blue Cross / Blue Shield? Empire? What on earth are you referring to? No one's "blaming bush" or obama or reid—- because no one understands what you are talking about.BY Honest Abe on 11/17/2009 at 16:24

Drudge Report
"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »
Red State
Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »
The Washington Independent
Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »

John Aravosis points out that Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) has dropped most of his unprecedented blanket hold on most of the White House's nominees -- except a few defense posts, which remain tied up as Shelby seeks two lucrative military contracts for his home state. Later, Aravosis reports that the Department of Health and Human Services has opened an investigation into the California Blue Cross health insurance program, following reports that premiums there have increased 39 percent recently.… Read More »

Also, gues blogger Ralph Reed offers his thoughts on former Gov. Sarah Palin's national political aspirations.
