Rep. King to hold jobs forum featuring immigration groups

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) on Thursday will host a jobs forum featuring witnesses from two groups that want to reduce the overall amount of immigration to the United States.

King, who serves as ranking member of the House Judiciary immigration subcommittee, announced today that he and committee ranking remember Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas) would host representatives from the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), a think tank, and NumbersUSA, a grassroots organizer. 

A release promoting the event, titled "American Jobs in Peril: The Impact of Uncontrolled Immigration," says the panel will take on the "impact of illegal immigration on American jobs."

The forum will also feature Carol Swain, an African-American law and political science professor at Vanderbilt University who has written about immigration.

The White House has declared that immigration reform will be on the Congressional agenda to pass next year, probably early next year. As usual It's going to be a very heated and divisive fight over immigration reform, that will rile up millions of Americans on both sides of the issue. However once Obama and Chuck Schumer put immigration reform on Congress's agenda, the usual national groups opposed to immigration reform started agitating and raising money - riling up voters all across this country. Let's be clear: nearly 80% of Americans are opposed to illegal immigration and amnesty policies. Even CNN poling shows that 73% of Americans want to see the number of illegal aliens decreased. The only "controvery" and criticism of mainstream groups such as CIS, NumbersUSA, and FAIR comes from far left ethnocentric groups such as La Raza and discredited groups such as the SPLC (research their fundraising scandals).BY NO AMNESTY!! on 11/18/2009 at 16:00
We will not deport 12,000,000 people who are here illegally and we don't want a massive underground. The groups opposed to immigration reform — Numbers, CIS, and King included — are opposed to the only sensible option left: get people living here into the system, integrating, paying taxes, and able to stand with other working people for better jobs and wages.The problem with these organizations isn't that they are bigoted (which is in the eye of the beholder) but that they are wrong and disingenuous. Do not get distracted from the core issues: illegal aliens hold about 8 millions jobs here. There are nearly 16 million Americans out of work, with our real unemployment rate hovering over 17%. If Obama truly cares about unemployed working class Americans, he will announce at his upcoming "jobs summit" they he will reinstitute workplace raids (which he has stopped), enforce our immigration laws, and drop his plans for "comprehensive immigration reform" a/k/a mass amnesty. We do not have to "round up and deport" 12 million illegals or give them pathway amnesty — the false choice spouted by well-funded pro-amnesty groups. Rather if we really enforce our immigration laws, the majority of illegals will return home over time. The cheap labor groups that say have illegal immigrants "pay taxes" "learn English" etc. and legalize them are in fact the groups that are disingenuous — as this was already tried with the supposed "one-time only" 1986 "comprehensive reform' amnesty in which after the amnesty was granted the promised enforcement disappeared. I wonder how many of the "send the illegals back" crowd think they can fill all the jobs the migrants do in our food industry. I ask if they are willing to get up at 4:00 or 5:00 am, walk an hour to the bus that takes them to the tomato fields, for example, set around until the dew goes of the tomato before they can begin to pick, then pick as fast and as hard as they can before they head for home. If it rains, and they cannot pick, there will be no wages for that day and then ride they have the ride back to town, sometimes an hour or more, which ends the day with a long walk home in the dark,. There is a good reason they are coming to the US. Our NAFTA and CAFTA trade agreements took away their abiltiy to keep their jobs or farm their small plots of land. Representative King would receive more respect from Iowans and the nation if he looked to reputable immigration studies for the facts he claims about immigration. Iowa State University at Ames, University of Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls, and University of Iowa at Iowa City have all done immigration studies. So has Iowa Policy Project at Iowa City. All four have found similar results for the impact of immigration on Iowa. Why is it that John Tanton's Numbers USA shows information pretty much the opposite of what studies done at our Iowa Universities have shown? Numbers USA, a controversial group, favors getting rid of immigrants while all of Iowa's Universities (King's state) show that Iowa's immigrant workers (legal and not) add millions of dollars to Iowa's economy. Deportation is always the easy answer to a very complicated problem. As with any easy answer, it is never a solution. Remember Postville, Iowa? That raid decimated four Iowa counties.
