Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) on Friday said that Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner should keep his job but that he would like to see his agency focus more on creating blue-collar jobs.
"He's got my confidence," Brown said on ABC News' "Top Line" webcast.
Brown, who is considered a liberal senator and represents a state with high unemployment, said Geithner needs to focus more on job creation in the manufacturing an auto sectors in order to spur job creation.
Geithner has come under pressure from Republicans and liberal Democrats this week to resign. Opponents of the Obama administration's economic policies cite rising unemployment, which reached a 26-year high of 10.2 percent in October. Critics also cite Geithner's role in last year's bank bailouts as large firms continue to shell out bonuses to top officials.
"[It is important to] keep pressure on Treasury to lend to manufacturing and auto supply [sectors]," Brown added, saying the focus would create a "ripple effect" of job creation for the middle-class.
Brown said he has met with top White House officials and expressed confidence that Treasury would act to allay his concerns.
