Kyl: If motion gets 60 votes, '97 percent chance' health bill will pass

By Bob Cusack - 11/21/09 09:57 AM ET

Senate GOP Whip Jon Kyl (Ariz.) said Friday that if Saturday's motion to proceed passes, there is 97 percent chance the underlying healthcare reform bill will clear the upper chamber.

While the White House would embrace those odds, Kyl is attempting to put pressure on centrist Democrats.

In an interview with Greta Van Susteren on Fox News, Kyl said, "Any senator (who) votes for this bill has to know that there's a 97 percent chance that this bill ends up passing.

"For those senators on the other side who said, 'Well I don't like this part or that part of it,' unless they've got 60 votes to change it, their vote to proceed to the vote to this bill is tantamount to a vote for the bill because they're not going to change it."

Sens. Mary Landreiu (D-La.) and Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.) have not committed to voting for the motion to proceed, but many on Capitol Hill believe they will.

Just like Jim Demint said, "A motion to PROCEED is a vote for the healthcare bill." He also went on to state,"Donot be fooled for when the motion to proceed occurs and then legislators vote "No" this is a trick used to enable them to be able to go back to their constituents and tell the citizens that they voted against the bill when the motion to "Proceed" was the motion that enacted the bill to approval." "Most citizens donot know this old trick is used for this purpose." As a voter I am sick of lies and deception used by our legislators to usurp power away from citizens of this country and the citizens are taking a stand against these blatant dictatorial powers legislators have bestowed upon themselves.BY Karen on 11/21/2009 at 10:08
There is a 100% chance that a majority of democrats are going home and a 100% chance the people are going to revolt.BY navy on 11/21/2009 at 10:22
Sen. Kyl is worthless. I wouldn't piss on him if he was on fire.BY Richard on 11/21/2009 at 12:25
Well, Landrieu just caved, and I bet Lincoln will too. The "good" news is that if anything close to the Democrats' Senate or House scheme passes, they will likely lose control of the House and possibly the Senate as voters will become aware of just how dangerous, costly, and radical this boondoggle is.BY No pap smears on 11/21/2009 at 13:03
I'm glad we're getting health care reform! This country needs it! I don't have health insurance, but I sure could use some. I would buy some myself but I can't get a full time job. (I have a degree in economics) : (BY republican  on 11/21/2009 at 13:59
This nation needs and deserves this bill, I am so sick of hearing about hard working Americans losing their homes and everything they own just because a immoral health insurance company didn't want to cover them any longer, I am sick of hearing about someone dying because of being denied coverage because a pre-existing condition. No More American Deaths because of a broken system and an immoral health insurance company. I really hope that those opposed to this bill, get the same ailments and conditions that those we have lost had or the ones that lost everything had, and are forced to deal with a system that has no compassion for you. I pray that those opposed to this bill get a dose of reality so they will finally understand why we all need to act compassionately to those in need.BY lifecoaches on 11/21/2009 at 14:09
This is history in the making and all those opposed are on the WRONG side of history.BY luvobamas on 11/21/2009 at 20:56
The Health Bill that now has a 97% chance of passing the Senate does nothing but impose a massive bureaucracy on the American people that will do nothing to slow down the cost or improve the quality of health care. This is the end of the "limited government" our Constitution was supposed to provide. Break out the black arm band. Freedom was great while it lasted.BY Jim Collis on 11/22/2009 at 02:40
Please explain how forcing every one to buy for profit health insurance improves anything.BY Miriam on 11/22/2009 at 13:21
Immoral health insurance companies? Companies are not immoral- a company cannot feel. Companies are in business to make money and provide services. If you want those services for free, go to a charity. I know it sounds harsh, but no one HAS to lose their home over health care bills. My family was so poor when I was growing up that the only one who had insurance was my father, we didn't have a phone until the mid-80's and I sat for hours at the dr's office if I got sick because we couldn't pay. But what we did was negotiate with hospitals and dr's offices to pay what we could- sometimes, that was only $10 a month. Guess what? No company can take your home or place a lien on your property if you MAKE A PAYMENT PLAN and STICK TO IT! It's a doctor's or nurse's job to have compassion. It's an insurance company's job to pay for the treatments agreed to in the health insurance plan. It's not a surprise what these plans cover. If more Americans learned to take care of things themselves instead of blaming others for all that's "wrong" in their lives, perhaps their lives wouldn't be so "wrong".BY Kathy on 11/22/2009 at 18:58

"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »

Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »

Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »
