Burr invokes the holidays in slamming health bill

Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) invoked the Thanksgiving and Christmas in criticizing the Democrats' healthcare reform proposal Saturday.

"This 20 pound bill is the size of many people's turkey next week," Burr said at a press conference Saturday afternoon.

Since the Senate bill was released, Republicans have often brought the physical bill to press appearances and onto the Senate floor to illustrate their objection to the bill's size.

Referring to the way some purchase their Christmas gifts, Burr said "this is the Harry Reid layaway plan for this holiday season."

Layaway is a purchasing method under which consumers can take an item home and pay for it in installments. Burr made his remarks, saying the bill would increase the federal debt while its provisions would not be fully implemented until 2014.
