Brown: Obama economic team has 'turned a corner'

By Jordan Fabian - 11/22/09 11:46 AM ET

After coming under fire for advancing policies some say do not do enough to help the middle-class, President Barack Obama's economic team has "turned a corner" on those issues, Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) said Sunday.

The liberal Brown, who represents a blue-collar state, has pressured the White House to focus more on aiding the manufacturing sector in order to create more middle-class jobs. On Friday, Brown said that he stands behind Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, but sought improvement from the agency on middle-class issues.

"I think they've turned a corner," Brown said on CNN's "State of the Union." "The focus next year is all about creating jobs and I think we'll begin to see changes."

Geithner, National Economic Council chairman Larry Summers and Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke have come unde fire from conservative congressmen and a growing amount of liberal lawmakers for policies they say heavily favor Wall Street banks instead of the middle-class and small businesses.

Brown appeared to key in on reports that President Barack Obama will use next year's State of the Union address to take on job creation an outline a domestic agenda that focuses on reducing the federal deficit. Brown said that Obama advisers such as manufacturing czar Ron Bloom are starting to have a bigger impact at the White House.

While Brown claimed Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and advisers like Bloom are committed to reviving the slumping manufacturing sector, he said other advisers have yet to come around the issue.

"I think the president is. I think the vice president is. I think the advisers are mixed," he said.

Turned the corner alright, and right off the cliff. The higher you tax, the more the manufacturing companies are going to locate elsewhere. Overseas, south of the border, anywhere but America. They will not be saddled with high taxes and if they are, you know who is going to pay, the people. Right out of the old paycheck. They always pass their costs on to the people. Always have and always will.BY Taxed on 11/22/2009 at 15:32
taxed - did you go to public school? do you have police or firefighters in your town? if you want to be a citizen of this country be prepared to be taxed. and be prepared to have the police protect you and the school systems educate you.BY taxed2 on 11/22/2009 at 15:46
Mr. Brown has his own agenda. ". . .pressured the White House to focus more on aiding the manufacturing sector in order to create more middle-class jobs"—did he think this up on his own or did it come from the Apollo Alliance with whom he has partnered to get Cap Trade passed? Mr. Brown is also heavily backed by the unions (daughter works for SEIU), Moveon.org, Soros Fund Mgmt, Forest City Enterprises, Democracy for America, etc. He does not represent the interests of Ohioans; he represents the interest of his campaign contributors and liberal affiliations!BY Ohioan on 11/22/2009 at 18:16
The question that everyone needs to ask is; What types of jobs will be created? More government and union jobs or private sector jobs? My guess, the job creation will be in the public/government sector and union positions. All you need to do is look at NJ to see how well that model works. When all that's left in this country are union jobs, low wage government workers and illegal aliens who then is going to pay for all of this out of control spending that this administration is placing on the American public, not to mention the 2 wars we still have raging. This administration cannot do anything to turn this economy around based on its tax and spend model. The private sector is well aware of this, as are the Chinese.BY itstheeconomystupid on 11/23/2009 at 08:12
Mr. Obama will once again will play to his base and create low paying jobs and leave the rest of the country behind…strapped with an insurmountable debt stemming from his new healthcare endeavor to all of the new proposed taxes to pay for these wars, etc. Get ready for the "double dip" Paving highways is not going to dig us out from this mess and yes, this President now owns this situation. No one in the private sector is going to borrow money under these economic conditions and will have no need for tax credit if there is in no need for their products and services. People will not be able to reinvest their profits into their businesses for job creation or better technology, etc. they will be made to pay an increase in taxes to fund Obama's new initiatives. How stupid does this administration think small business owners are in this environment. ItBY Itstheeconomystupid on 11/23/2009 at 08:15

Little Johnny is not an Obama fan A teacher asked her 6th grade class how many of them were Obama fans. Not really knowing what an Obama fan is, but wanting to be liked by the teacher, all the kids raised their hands except for Little Johnny. The teacher asked Little Johnny why he has decided to be different… again.Little Johnny said, "Because I'm not an Obama fan."The teacher asked, "Why aren't you a fan of Obama?" Johnny said, "Because I'm a Republican."The teacher asked him why he's a Republican. Little Johnny answered, "Well, my Mom's a Republican and my Dad's a Republican, so I'm a Republican."Annoyed by this answer, the teacher asked, "If your mom were a moron and your dad were an idiot, what would that make you?"With a big smile, Little Johnny replied, "That would make me an Obama fan."BY notanobamafan on 11/23/2009 at 10:01
Brown is a leftist hack who doesn't know what he's talking about. His seat will be one of the easier Republican pick-ups the gives the GOP control of the Senate.BY Beasquared on 11/23/2009 at 10:34
The focus NEXT YEAR is about creating jobs? Why isn't that the focus now? The Democratic Party has become a complete and total joke.BY Obama is pathetic on 11/23/2009 at 12:10
Look at California, New York, New Jersey, Michaigan, etc. all liberal and democratic controlled - writing IOU's to stay afloat, taxed to death, stagnated by unions, residents fleeing for other states. Does anyone honestly think more of the same that's destroyed those states will somehow help America? Obama and the dem's focus on more and more entitlements, high taxes and attacks on captialism will be this country's undoing. Let's just divide the country now - let conservatives take the red states and liberals keep the blue - we'll see how long it is before the west coast and northeast are third country [***]-holes.BY Conservativetothecor on 11/23/2009 at 12:34

Drudge Report
Bannered across Drudge this morning is a question most of us in the Beltway have asked about the snow storm Friday: "When will it stop?" Below, Drudge links to an AP article on the recent trouble facing New York Gov. David Paterson (D), who many thought was about to be rocked by political scandal by a forthcoming story in The New York Times. That story hasn't arrived -- but speculation about its contents surely has -- leading Paterson to say he would depart office only as a result of the ballot box, or if he's carried out "in a box."… Read More »
The Huffington Post
"KEEP TRYING" -- That's the message one HuffPo writer took from the latest WaPo/ABC poll, which showed 63 percent of Americans still favored further action on healthcare reform. Additionally, Ryan Grim posts his recent interview with Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.), who predicted his chamber's historic filibuster could "fall of its own weight -- it should fall of its own weight -- or it will fall after some massive conflict on the floor, which has happened in the past where there have been rulings from the chair that have led to reform."… Read More »
The Corner
The Corner's Mark Krikorian points out in a recent post that the private sector -- namely, the National Review -- was able to devise how many immigrants were residing within the United States faster than the U.S. government could produce that data. And offering further proof that former Gov. Sarah Palin's (R-Alaska) crib notes have become something of a political meme is Kathryn Jean Lopez, who notices a famous country singer penning notes on his hand.… Read More »
The Washington Independent
"The story of coals dirty, deadly legacy" headlines The Washington Independent this morning. The story relates the political significance, health effects and community impacts of a fossil fuel that reporter Mike Lillis believes has White House's clear embrace.Earlier, Lillis looked at one element of Democrats' forthcoming jobs bill: A proposed unemployment insurance extension. The bill offers jobless Americans an additional three months of aid -- less than what the White House's budget requests, but on par with the House's extention, passed late last year.… Read More »
Red State
Michael Steele's remark this week -- that he has been subject to intense criticism because of his race -- has earned the scorn of Red State's Eric Erickson, who lambasts the Republican National Committee chairman in a blog post published late Tuesday. "Actually, it could have nothing to do with race and everything to do with outsourcing the RNC to the same consultants who have been bleeding the RNC dry for years," he says of Steele's low popularity. "It could have something to do with management styles. It could have everything to do with the Chairman never meeting a shoe he didn’t want to eat."… Read More »

Jonathan Singer on Wednesday explores the current state of President Barack Obama's judicial nominations. But with the help of Slate's Doug Kendall, he finds that the president has both nominated fewer and confirmed fewer judges to federal benches than his predecessor at this point in his presidency. Concludes Singer: "But with a real crisis in the judiciary in the form of dozens of vacancies, one has to wonder why this President has nominated fewer than half of the judges nominated by his predecessor."… Read More »
