Ron Paul: 'My intention is to get rid of the Fed'

By Michael O'Brien - 11/23/09 10:24 AM ET

The end of the Federal Reserve is the ultimate goal of an audit of that institution, Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) said Monday.

Paul, the sponsor of a resolution seeking an audit of the Fed, conceded that his ultimate goal is to end the monetary institution, with a hope that the audit would expose enough information for Americans to clamor for the board's end.

"My intention is to get rid of the Fed," Paul said during an interview on CNBC. "I don't say this is the step -- I mean, the whole purpose is to expose it."

The libertarian Republican, long an opponent of the kind of active monetary policy practiced by the Fed, said it would likely self-destruct under the weight of its own actions.

"I won't end the Fed; they're not going to pass a law to manage monetary policy or end the Fed -- that's not going to happen," Paul said. "But the Fed's going to self-destruct because they're going to destroy the dollar."

The House Financial Services Committee included Paul's proposal to audit the Fed, which has 313 cosponsors in the House, in its financial regulation overhaul.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has sponsored a related bill in the Senate, which has 30 cosponsors, though some senators have blasted the proposal.

Sen. Judd Gregg (R-N.H.), the ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee, called Paul's proposal "a dangerous move by this Congress to pander to the populist anger currently directed against our central bank" last week.

The Texas congressman responded to Gregg on Monday, arguing that Americans are behind an audit of the Fed.

"Pandering? Well in a sense, I do; I pander to the people, because it's the people who are behind this thing," Paul argued. "The Federal Reserve, they say they want 'independence.' Every time they say 'independence'...what they're talking about is secrecy. What I'm talking about is transparency."

Your title almost implies there is something underhanded about wanting to end a fourth branch of government, no where mentioned in our Constitution, which has more power of the purse than Congress currently exercises, when it gets right down to it.Congressman Paul thinks that when people see what the Fed has been up too, people will want it abolished or at least reined in. However, that is entirely dependent on what the Fed actually has done. If, for example, it has been using the public purse to bail out its cronies in preferential fashion, that likely would cause outrage. If it has been unilaterally determining foreign policy through agreements with foreign banks, that would likely cause outrage. If it hasn't, it has no reason to be concerned.Only an audit will let us know.BY spinnikerca on 11/23/2009 at 11:05
Good job Ron.BY Ben on 11/23/2009 at 11:17
What has the Fed done for Americans?-Destroyed the value of our dollar-Financed wars and welfare state through inflation-Bailed out those politically connectedIronic that the same people that destroyed our housing market were given billions… to keep going. An audit would expose to the people the power of the Fed. It is absolutely more powerful than the president and congress. Those who have the power to coin our money and give it to those they see fit with no independent oversight is a very dangerous entity that can/could or will harm every dollar holder. To much power in to few hands.BY PJ McFlur on 11/23/2009 at 11:45
Another hint that Dr. Paul wants to get rid of the Fed could be the fact that his latest book bears the title, "End the Fed".And it seems to me that if we want our money to be independent from political influence, the only option is a money based on Gold or other hard assets.BY Zach on 11/23/2009 at 12:05
Spinnikerca: I don't think the title of the article implies anything underhanded about Ron Paul's actions/motivations, I think it was the most objective way to title the point of the article. It was a quotation, rather than a paraphrase, and virtually any paraphrase of that statement would be charged in some way given the weirdness of this issue (some people gung-ho about getting rid of the Fed, and people who don't care or really focus on monetary policy defending it cuz they don't see anything wrong with a quasi-private institution of banks having the power to print the nation's money as if it were a commodity that the people are privileged to use)BY Oren on 11/23/2009 at 12:16
Who are these hilarious idiots who are upset about the dollar and so they support Ron Paul's attempts to *COMPLETELY OBLITERATE THE DOLLAR* as a solution. It's like saying "this horse isn't fast enough, let's break its legs." Thank God somebody like Senator Gregg is willing to stand up, not pander to idiots, and protect our currency. The problem is the Fed isn't independent enough from these dangerous, dangerous idiots.BY Jay on 11/23/2009 at 12:30
Ron Paul is the latest and most vocal proponent for "Austrian Economics" He has the right idea s needs to be our next presidentBY Don on 11/23/2009 at 12:30

Wow! Great interview. It's hard to believe CNBC and (MS)NBC are under the same umbrella. CNBC seems to "get it" when it comes to the gravity of the situation and Rep. Paul's understanding of it, whereas the other only seems to engage in the worst kind of superfluous, immature tabloid-style reporting. Kudos to CNBC.BY Darryl Schmitz on 11/23/2009 at 13:00
@JAYHow well has the Federal Reserve done? Since 1913, when the Fed was created, the dollar has lost 95% of it's purchasing power. The "horse" has been breaking the legs of the people.Senator Gregg and the Fed do not protect our currency one bit.BY JoshLowry on 11/23/2009 at 13:02

"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »

Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »

Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »
