Kyl says Hayworth unlikely to run against McCain, let alone win

By Michael O'Brien - 11/24/09 10:12 AM ET

Former Rep. J.D. Hayworth (R-Ariz.) is unlikely to run in a GOP primary against Sen. John McCain, let alone win, Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) said Monday.

Kyl, the second-ranking Republican in the Senate, said he expects the former congressman, who's been mulling a primary challenge to McCain's right next year, to carry on his activities as host of a radio show, and not as a candidate.

"No, I don't think that J.D. Hayworth will run," Kyl told reporters, according to AZCentral.com. "He's got a radio program that I understand is very popular. A lot of folks listen to it. My guess is he will carry on his political activity in that venue."

Hayworth made his name in Congress for being a staunch opponent of immigration reform, a cause McCain favors. The issue is especially salient in Arizona, a state that shares its southern border with Mexico.

A recent Rasmussen poll showed Hayworth within the margin of error of a potential matchup of the 2008 GOP presidential nominee.

The poll, released Friday, showed 45 percent of Republican voters in the state favoring McCain in a primary, compared to 43 percent for Hayworth. The poll, conducted Nov. 18, has a 4 percent margin of error.

If Hayworth were to run, Kyl said, he'd still put the smart (Monopoly) money on McCain in any primary.

"I guess it's illegal to bet on the outcome of elections, but I'll just predict that John McCain will have another six years representing the people of the state of Arizona in the U.S. Senate after the next election," Kyl said.

McCain is running for his fifth term in the Senate next year, while Hayworth served six terms in the House before losing to now-Rep. Harry Mitchell (D-Ariz.) in the 2006 midterm elections.

I live in AZ and am delighted that McCain will continue to represent us. Hayworth is a bitter "radio entertainer" that's just trying to increase his listeners…We may not always agree on every issue with McCain; but we know him to be a good and honerable man that tries to represents ALL the people in AZ…not just the "fringe" element.BY Happyinaz on 11/24/2009 at 11:08
With all due respect Mr. Kyl, we moderate conservatives are sick and tired of being thrown under the bus by John McCain. And especially if he teams up with Lindsey Graham and Charles Schumer to again push mass amnesty and expanded "guest worker" amnesty schemes for illegal aliens during this era of mass unemployment, you will see J.D. Hayworth's support and poll ratings skyrocket.BY son of Arizona on 11/24/2009 at 11:21
I live in Arizona and Jon Kyl is the most mealy-mouthed wimpy politician in the Senate. He's worked on McCain's campaigns in the past (chairman) and will 'promote' the feckless McCain to keep power. Kyl and McCain went against the people of AZ in the immigration/amnesty battle under Bush. McCain said from the get-go that he'll work with Obama on a new amnesty for illegals. Kyl will too. What exactly has McCain done for AZ. Less than he's done for himself. I won't be fooled again by the GOP and their "mavericks." JD Hayworth is closer to representing Arizonans than McCain or Kyl.BY Jack on 11/24/2009 at 12:01
Because I am a true conservative, McCain will not get my primary vote. JD has some good positions, but I don't think he will in fact run.I am hoping a true conservative will emerge. I don't know much about Chris Simcox other than I believe he is the founder of the Minutemen on the boarder. Because I'm not a single issue voter, I don't know if Chris has the starch to stand up under conservative scrutiny. Has he actually read the constitution and the federalist papers? I don't know. I don't think McCain has. If a candidate has not read these documents, they are simply Not Qualified to run for federal office.BY Laura in AZ on 11/24/2009 at 12:40
McCain is a good man, who I voted for…however, the Repubs need some fresh, more truly conservative blood in the Senate. I hope Hayworth will make a run and McCain enters the ranks of the honorably retired.BY Dr. Mark on 11/24/2009 at 14:27
McCain lost any further votes from me in AZ the minute he voted for TARP! Someone needs to represent this states true conservative values and remind those in Washington that the states have the final say on the big issues. Unfortunately, McCain is not that person.BY Tim in AZ on 11/24/2009 at 15:49
I live in AZ and am delighted that McCain will no longer represent us. Hayworth is a great radio entertainer that's just trying to increase awarenessBY VERYHAPPYINAZ on 11/24/2009 at 21:36
Hayworth is yet another angry old white male blaming his failures in life on "the other". Too bad racist always loses in America. If the GOP contingent, Sen. Sessions (Alabama) , DeMint (S. Carolina)(racis t stereotype, anyone?) continues to oppose a just and comprehensive immigration reform, the GOP will never win another election again.Simply put, Billy Bob is on the wrong side of both history and demographics…BY Mery on 12/03/2009 at 17:02
I'm with you, "Happy in AZ." McCain's still got my vote, as well as my respect and appreciation for his service and sacrifice. JD once had my respect also… but now he's just a snarky, bitter, petty, partisan hack. Much like most conservatives now. It's quite sad really.BY Happy in AZ 2 on 12/08/2009 at 19:58

"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »

Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »

Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »
