MLB pitcher interning for Ag. Department
Meet the most famous intern in DC:
An e-mail requesting an internship arrived at the Agriculture Department this summer with an impressive resume: Princeton University degree in operations research and financial engineering, 3.8 college GPA, 1520 SATs.
Ross Ohlendorf didn't mention his 95 mph sinking fastball, but it probably wouldn't have hurt his chances. Department officials were impressed that the Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher wanted to work for them in the offseason.
Ohlendorf, whose family owns a cattle ranch outside Austin, says the USDA is a perfect opportunity to combine his interest in agriculture and government.
The Pirates pitcher got his foot in the door when he caught Tom Vilsack's opening pitch at a game in Pittsburgh. He then chatted up the secretary for a moment, and followed up with an email to Vilsack's assistant.
Sounds like Ohlendorf's networking skills are as impressive as his fastball.
