Ros-Lehtinen: Israel's expulsion from event is 'demonization' tactic

By Bridget Johnson - 11/29/09 03:03 PM ET

A member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee has stepped into a dispute over a competition co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy.

Spain is hosting the Solar Decathlon Europe in June 2010, an international competition in which teams from 20 universities compete by building a model house. A team from Israel's Ariel University Center in the West Bank qualified as one of the finalists in October 2008 and began building the house, but was informed by the Spanish government in September that the Israeli team was being expelled from the competition because the university is located in the "occupied territories."

"It is outrageous that a group of scientists is being barred from participating in an international scientific competition because they are from the West Bank," Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) said in a Wednesday statement.

"The decision by the Spanish government to expel the Israeli team from Ariel University Center of Samaria represents a dangerous assault on the principles of scientific exchange and academic freedom, and contributes to the demonization of the state of Israel."

Ros-Lehtinen's statement comes as pro-Israel activists stepped up the pressure last week, urging supporters to write legislators and U.S. government agencies to apply pressure to Spain.

"Singling out Israel for special discrimination is anti-Semitic," said the Israel advocacy group StandWithUs, which noted that the West Bank university has both Arab and Israeli students.

The group has also collected more than 6,500 signatures since last week on an online petition that urges the U.S. to withdraw its co-sponsorship of the competition if Spain does not readmit the Ariel team.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center and Anti-Defamation League have also spoken out against Spain's action.

The UK-based Architects and Planners for Justice in Palestine, which supports boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel, pressured Spain to expel the team.

Spain's Housing Ministry said in a letter to the university: "The fact that your center is actually located in the occupied territories, and being obliged to respect the European Union position in relation to this matter, we are forced to inform you that the continuation of your center in this competition will not be possible."

As host country, Spain has final say over the participants, despite co-sponsorship of the DOE and the European Union.

“I call on mainstream academics and scientists—within Spain and internationally—to reject these derisive attempts to demonize Israel and taint an international educational event with hateful ideology," Ros-Lehtinen said.

Israeli voters made abundantly clear that they want Israel to be solely responsible for it's foreign relations and therefore Israeli voters needs to stop leaning on the US every time they have a foreign relations spat. We aren't their baby sitters after all. Also Congress should condemn boycotts as counter-productive to the goals of dialogue and debate.BY Chris Baker on 11/29/2009 at 16:20
Nuts like Ros-Lehtinen need to shut up and let us handle our own fights. Whenever an air head like her jumps to try and make an impression she hurts Israel. We can fight our own battles, you need to stick to messing with Honduras and making a fool out of yourself there.BY Isaac on 11/29/2009 at 17:31
A few days ago hundreds of Likudniks, Netanyahu's own Party, held a lively anti-Obama rally in Israel. Rally leaders called Pres. Obama and members of his Administration anti-Semites and Self-hating Jews. They insisted that Israel handle its own problems and not be dictated to by Mr. Obama.Previously, Israelis have publicly protested the U.S.'s meddling in Israel's affairs and called Mr. Obama a name synonymous with the "n" word. I agree that Israel should handle its own issues. It should start by refusing all financial and military assistance from the U.S.A. It should also stop whining like a baby and calling the U.S.A. to its defense every time it's called out for breaking international law.BY Jezreel on 11/30/2009 at 01:41

Whoa! — I guess MoveOn.org wakes you Trolls up in the middle of the night with orders to get to your laptops and say any outrageous thing you can dream up. — Sadly for you, you all have as much effect as 1 fruit fly. — Little Ileana and little Israel are tough as nails. — Now, go back to sleep.BY cme on 11/30/2009 at 05:03

The Mission also examined the intense artillery attacks, again including white phosphorous munitions, on Al Wafa hospital in eastern Gaza City, a facility for patients receiving long-term care and suffering from particularly serious injuries. On the basis of the information gathered, the Mission found a violation of the prohibition of attacks on civilian hospitals in the cases of both hospitals.BY whylie on 11/30/2009 at 08:54
BY marc in 1492 columbus sailed the ocean blue, why ? because the jewish population was being EXPELLED FROM SPAIN Got really hot for us during the Inquisition by the Catholic Church in Spain. Thousands of my ancestors were slaughtered because the "holy fathers" needed all the Jew's worldly goods. That's the reason people like "Little Ileana" should shut her mouth, we don't need people like her trying to make up for the harm done of our people by her church.BY Isaac on 11/30/2009 at 09:34

Drudge Report
Bannered across Drudge this morning is a question most of us in the Beltway have asked about the snow storm Friday: "When will it stop?" Below, Drudge links to an AP article on the recent trouble facing New York Gov. David Paterson (D), who many thought was about to be rocked by political scandal by a forthcoming story in The New York Times. That story hasn't arrived -- but speculation about its contents surely has -- leading Paterson to say he would depart office only as a result of the ballot box, or if he's carried out "in a box."… Read More »
The Huffington Post
"KEEP TRYING" -- That's the message one HuffPo writer took from the latest WaPo/ABC poll, which showed 63 percent of Americans still favored further action on healthcare reform. Additionally, Ryan Grim posts his recent interview with Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.), who predicted his chamber's historic filibuster could "fall of its own weight -- it should fall of its own weight -- or it will fall after some massive conflict on the floor, which has happened in the past where there have been rulings from the chair that have led to reform."… Read More »
The Corner
The Corner's Mark Krikorian points out in a recent post that the private sector -- namely, the National Review -- was able to devise how many immigrants were residing within the United States faster than the U.S. government could produce that data. And offering further proof that former Gov. Sarah Palin's (R-Alaska) crib notes have become something of a political meme is Kathryn Jean Lopez, who notices a famous country singer penning notes on his hand.… Read More »
The Washington Independent
"The story of coals dirty, deadly legacy" headlines The Washington Independent this morning. The story relates the political significance, health effects and community impacts of a fossil fuel that reporter Mike Lillis believes has White House's clear embrace.Earlier, Lillis looked at one element of Democrats' forthcoming jobs bill: A proposed unemployment insurance extension. The bill offers jobless Americans an additional three months of aid -- less than what the White House's budget requests, but on par with the House's extention, passed late last year.… Read More »
Red State
Michael Steele's remark this week -- that he has been subject to intense criticism because of his race -- has earned the scorn of Red State's Eric Erickson, who lambasts the Republican National Committee chairman in a blog post published late Tuesday. "Actually, it could have nothing to do with race and everything to do with outsourcing the RNC to the same consultants who have been bleeding the RNC dry for years," he says of Steele's low popularity. "It could have something to do with management styles. It could have everything to do with the Chairman never meeting a shoe he didn’t want to eat."… Read More »
MyDD
Jonathan Singer on Wednesday explores the current state of President Barack Obama's judicial nominations. But with the help of Slate's Doug Kendall, he finds that the president has both nominated fewer and confirmed fewer judges to federal benches than his predecessor at this point in his presidency. Concludes Singer: "But with a real crisis in the judiciary in the form of dozens of vacancies, one has to wonder why this President has nominated fewer than half of the judges nominated by his predecessor."… Read More »
