Will Reid support Stupak amendment? 'We'll see'
Majority Leader Harry Reid today was mum today on whether he'd support a Senate version of the Stupak amendment.
Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to propose a measure similar to the House amendment, which pro-choice Democrats said went too far in restricting abortion coverage.
Nelson has pledged to filibuster any bill that doesn't include strong language restricting federal funding of abortion.
Reid, who is more pro-life than most in the Democratic caucus, would not say whether he'd support a Stupak-like amendment.
"Well, we'll see," he told reporters.
Reid emphasized that Nelson hasn't presented his final language yet.
"First of all, we have to see what his amendment is," Reid said. "Our underlying legislation is different than the House, and he's in the process of drafting his amendment."
Nelson has indicated that his amendment is likely to be very similar, if not identical, to the Stupak measure.
