Tea Party supporters, conservative groups rally outside Capitol
Scores of Tea Party protesters tried to cram into the Russell Senate office building this afternoon to convince lawmakers to vote against the Senate Democrats' healthcare bill.
Their efforts -- largely reminiscent of the 9/12 and "House Call" protests from earlier this year -- capped off an afternoon rally that featured remarks from Sens. Tom Coburn (R-Okla) and Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), Rep. Michele Bachmann, (R-Minn.) conservative radio host Laura Ingraham and others.
Protesters chanted "Kill this bill!" -- as they have at previous rallies -- while carrying signs decrying what many called "Obummer-care." Throughout the event, one man dressed as a grim reaper pretended to whip cariactures of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and other political figures.
Tuesday's rally, chiefly organized by the "Code Red" conservative group, was billed by its supporters as an "emergency rally" to stop Democrats from moving any further on healthcare reform.
Interestingly enough, the Democrats that many protesters hoped to press for a "no vote" were not in their offices to field complaints. Rather, they were at the White House meeting the president for a caucus meeting on healthcare.
