Pelosi headed to Copenhagen
Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) will lead a House delegation to the Copenhagen climate conference, her office confirmed tonight.
It had been unclear until now whether a busy legislative schedule would keep House leaders from attending the international conference.
Pelosi will head a delegation including Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) and all the major players in House cap-and-trade debate, including House Energy and Commerce chairman Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), House Ways and Means chairman Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.), Rep. Ed Markey (D-Calif.).
Pelosi noted the House's approval of climate legislation in a statement announcing the trip.
"The House of Representatives has taken historic action to address the climate crisis and transition our country to a clean energy economy,” she said. “We see Copenhagen as a meeting about job creation – how do we move forward to create millions of clean energy jobs and new technologies to keep America number one. We are going to send a message of support for the Obama Administration’s efforts and we bring with us the strong commitment of the Congress to take action, as the House of Representatives did in June.”
But not the entire delegation is enthusiastic about the climate bill. A number of Republicans will also attend, including Reps. Joe Barton (R-Tex.), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and John Sullivan (R-Okla.)
