Obama delivers Christmas cheer to D.C. Boys and Girls Club

By Michael O'Brien - 12/21/09 05:25 PM ET

President Barack Obama traveled to a Boys and Girls Club in Washington on Monday for some yuletide cheer.

Obama made an unscheduled trip to the Richard England Clubhouse and Community Center at 41st and Benning Road NE in Washington, where he visited with young boys and girls for 25 minutes.

According to a pool report, Obama delivered gingerbread men, maple leaf, and Christmas tree-shaped cookies, as well as cookies in the shape of his dog, Bo.

Obama greeted the 27 children and read them "The Polar Express," the 1985 children's book about a magical trip onboard a locomotive to visit Santa Claus at the North Pole.

One kid, according to the report, promised to let the president win at a game of foosball if the president agreed to come visit again.

How nice. He just won't let them get vouchers so they can get an education and break the poverty cycle.BY ctmom on 12/21/2009 at 16:39
Why would you [***]ume that the kids are in the poverty cycle. Most of the kids are in charter schools.BY JLewis on 12/21/2009 at 17:49
What does attending a charter school have to do with poverty? DC public charter schools serve the same students as DC public schools. Regardless, any of the students at a Boys and Girls club at 41st and Benning NE are likely not attending Georgetown Day in NW.BY DCTEACHER on 12/21/2009 at 21:06
I am sure the far right crazies will claim that he is trying to indoctrinate the children.BY Chris on 12/21/2009 at 21:28
@CHRIS you know Jake2 will think this is all ACORNS and schuuuuuuuuuuuu umer's fault.BY Lloyd C on 12/21/2009 at 23:17
My teeth hurt from all of this saccharin-sugar-sweet nonsense in THE HILL about Obama visiting the poor kids in the Boys and Girls Clubs - none of whom can afford local parish Catholic Schools, much less Sidwell . — Why are you at THE HILL being such hypocrites? — Obama doesn't believe in Christmas. — He and Mic[***]e didn't want The Manger displayed in the WH. — Imagine that??!! — White House Tradition happily over-ruled them as the White House is The Peoples' House and not theirs. — He has no emotional attachment to this Country's history which is why it was so offensive that he would do a "photo op" in "enemy territory" as one of his wags stated, at West Point. — He doesn't believe in Western Civilization or Traditions, as exemplified by The Bible or the dramas of Aeschylus or Shakespeare or novels by Melville or the music of Bach, Bernstein or Copland. — None of this reverberates in him. — His attempt at being accepted as the first "Pacific President" was sneered at in the Orient. — He doesn't even belong in Africa. — He has rejected the one Country and Culture that welcomed him with open arms, the United States of America. — He's "a man without a country", anonymous and completely contemporary without roots. — His visits to wounded warriors or to deprived children have no authenticity. — He is not REAL. — He's a "construct" of the political machine that engineered his life and his election. — It's tragic for him and for this Country that wanted him to be authentic.BY cme on 12/22/2009 at 00:09
