Obama notified about second disturbance on Flight 253
Flight 253 -- the same flight from Amsterdam that was attacked Christmas Day -- had to deal with another disruptive passenger today as it landed in Detroit.
The man, who is Nigerian, locked himself in the plane's bathroom for an hour and was verbally combative, AP is reporting, citing an unnamed source.
All passengers got off the plane safely. Airports have significantly beefed up security measures since a 23-year-old Nigerian man allegedly attempted to ignite an explosive device on the Northwest Airlines flight as it touched down in Detroit on Friday. For example, many passengers have been told they can not leave their seats for the last hour of a flight.
White House spokesman Bill Burton said President Barack Obama was notified about the "unruly passenger" shortly after 9 a.m. Hawaiian time (3 p.m. Eastern time) by National Security Staff chief of staff Denis McDonough.
"The president stressed the importance of maintaining heightened security measures for all air travel and gave instructions to set up another secure teleconference briefing as soon as possible," Burton said in a statement.
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Sunday that air travel is "very, very safe." At the same time, Republicans including Peter Hoekstra of Michigan, the ranking GOP on the House Intelligence Committee, said the Christmas Day attack shows weaknesses in U.S. security procedures and failures to recognize potential threats.
