Hoekstra now satisfied with WH take on Flight 253
Rep. Peter Hoekstra (R-Mich.) on Sunday declared a political victory
of sorts in the ongoing debate about the White House's handling of
Flight 253.
The congressman tweeted:
Last week administration said system worked.Today they recognized the emerging threat.Said they would aggressively confront it!Progress!
The secretary initially clarified that she meant
the country's security infrastructure writ large, but the comment still
received considerable media attention. Some Republicans even tried to
morph it into a reason to call for her ouster.
The White House
has since admitted the intelligence community experienced a "systemic
failure" in the months before the Christmas Day attack, and a number of
administration officials have repeated calls for serious reform to
prevent against additional security breaches.
But only Sunday did those responses seem to satisfy Hoekstra, one of the White House's leading critics on counter-terrorism.
"We
recognize the imminent threat. We are committed to enhancing our
intelligence capabilities and our offensive capability to deal with
this," he told ABC's "This Week," praising Deputy National Security
Adviser John Brennan's remarks earlier on the program.
"I think the pressing issue that's going to be coming up over the next few months is, how do we deal with Americans who have joined Al Qaida and are now part of the machine that wants to attack the United States?" Hoekstra posited.
