Blumenthal to run for Dodd's seat

State Attorney General Richard Blumenthal (D) has told the AP that he will run for Sen. Chris Dodd's (D-Conn.) seat.

News broke of the retirements of Sens. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) and Chris Dodd within seven hours of each other. But while Dorgan's exit gave Democrats reason for concern, Dodd's is very likely to help them.

But the big winner could be Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.).

Blumenthal was eyeing a run against Lieberman in 2012, but running for an open seat is a much better opportunity. And apparently, it was an easy decision for Blumenthal.

Blumenthal's decision leaves Lieberman some breathing room, for now, in 2012.

Look for analysts to move Connecticut into the "toss-up" or "Democrat favored" category now that Blumenthal is in.
