Lawmaker calls for immediate security audit of all U.S. airports

Airports nationwide should face an immediate audit of their security, a top Democrat on the House Homeland Security Committee said Wednesday.

Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-Texas), the chairwoman of the committee's Subcommittee on Transportation Security and Infrastructure Protection, called for an immediate review of airport security following the attempted Christmas Day bombing of a flight en route to Detroit from Amsterdam.

"I am today calling for an audit of the nation's major airports -- a security audit," Jackson-Lee said during an interview on Fox News. "Every single airport, starting with the top 10, should be audited on the basis of their security structure, and compliance."

"I believe it should be done right now, no hesitation," Jackson-Lee added. "I then believe the Secretary of Homeland Security should be asked to draft a domestic security roadmap."

Jackson-Lee has been outspoken about the lapses in airline security in the attempted December attack, in which a Nigerian man was able to slip through security checkpoints with explosives he failed to detonate.

That suspect, mar Farouk Abdulmutallab, was indicted on six federal charges, including attempted use of weapons of mass destruction, this afternoon.

Jackson-Lee said "heads should roll" for the security lapses, but said that Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano should keep her job.

"I think heads should roll, new procedures should be in place, and I agree with the president, who's taken the ownership for this crisis," she said, before defending Napolitano's handling of the situation.
