Campbell a player in Calif. GOP Senate primary

Carly Fiorina and Chuck DeVore are yesterday's news.

That's according to a new Field Poll of the GOP Senate primary in California, which shows former Rep. Tom Campbell (R-Calif.) beginning the race with a 30-25 lead over Fiorina. DeVore, who had rivaled Fiorina in some previous primary polls, is down to 6 percent.

The poll echoes a survey Campbell's campaign released when he switched from the governor's race to the Senate race earlier this month. That poll, conducted by Wilson Research Strategies, had Campbell leading Fiorina 31-15, with DeVore at 12 percent.

An October Field poll had Fiorina leading DeVore by just one point, 21-20, so the new poll suggests Campbell's entry has taken a bite out of DeVore, at least for now.

Campbell will likely need to raise much more money in order to compete, and Fiorina and DeVore have plenty of room for growth. But the new guy in the race certainly begins in a formidable position.
