Kirk, Giannoulias lead down the stretch

Rep. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) and Illinois state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias (D) are the favorites heading into the final weeks of their Senate primaries.

A new Chicago Tribune poll of the infrequently polled race shows Kirk in a commanding position and Giannoulias up by double digits, though neither is over 50 percent. Of the two, Giannoulias is ceding more support to his foes.

Giannoulias, however, is benefitting from a wide field, with Democrats David Hoffman and Cheryle Robinson Jackson splitting up the rest of the vote.

The poll was conducted Jan. 16-20. The primary is Feb. 2.

The results:

Kirk 47, developer Patrick Hughes 8, several others with 3 percent or less

Giannoulias 34, Robinson Jackson 19, Hoffman 16, two others with 1 percent
