Senators move to block civilian trials for terrorists
A bipartisan group of senators will announce legislation tomorrow to cut off funds for terrorists' civilian trials.
The bill would effectively halt the administration's plan to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and other 9/11 plotters in federal courts.
Five senators will announce their support for the bill tomorrow: Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.), John McCain (R-Ariz.), Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.), Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.).
A House verison of the legislation was introduced last week by Rep. Pete King (R-N.Y.), chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee.
Republicans and a handful of Democrats have criticized the administration for choosing federal courts instead of military tribunals for 9/11 plotters as well as the failed Christmas Day bomber. Plans to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in New York City are now in doubt after several prominent NYC pols--including Mayor Mike Bloomberg and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y)--came out against the idea.
