Nelson pushes incremental healthcare approach

Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) suggested today that Democrats take an incremental approach to healthcare reform rather than pushing through a comprehensive bill.

Democrats are trying to decide whether they have the votes to muscle the Senate bill through the House. Nelson, however, suggested they may want to slow down the pass the bill piece by piece.

"I've said that I think this is something that you can do incrementally, and you can do in pieces, where you can get support if there's insufficient support for a comprehensive approach," Nelson told reporters.

Nelson said that in years past he had proposed an incremental approach that got no momentum.

"Now maybe people are ready to step back and say let's look at individual pieces and see if we can get things done like that," he said.
