Former Rep. Davis passes on rematch with Roe
At least one former member weighing a comeback is taking a pass.
Former Rep. David Davis (R-Tenn.) has announced he won't seek a return to Congress. Davis had been considering a primary rematch with freshman Rep. Phil Roe (R-Tenn.), who unseated Davis in 2008.
"People have encouraged me to run for Congress again in 2010 and polling data suggest that I could be successful," Davis told the Erwin Record. "I have decided, however, not to seek re-election this year. In my opinion, a re-election bid would require a negative campaign that would not be in the best interest of the First Congressional District nor the political process. People are tired of nasty politics and it is not in my nature to mount that type of campaign."
Davis had been taking some shots at Roe's record since Roe succeeded him.
We're still awaiting word from former Reps. Bill Sali (R-Idaho) and Virgil Goode (R-Va.). About 20 former members of Congress are running in top federal and gubernatorial races this year.
