Schumer wants Giants to keep training camp in Albany

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Wednesday penned a letter to New York Giants co-owner John Mara asking him to keep his team's summer training camp in the state's capital area.

The Giants are contemplating moving their training camp from the University at Albany to East Rutherford, N.J., where they play their home games.

"Nothing made me happier than seeing the Giants win the Super Bowl a few years ago, and I am confident that Albany will play a role in returning the Giants to their rightful place as champions," Schumer said in a statement, according to the Albany Times-Union.

Schumer, who hails from Brooklyn, has been a vocal proponent of keeping sports teams in Upstate New York. Last month, he spoke to the owner of the Buffalo Bills to encourage him not to move the team from the economically struggling city.

The New York senator also took a jab at the Giants' digs in Jersey.

"Holding the training camp in Albany is good for both the Giants' morale and cohesion and the local economy," he said. "What's more, the training camp has become one of the favorite ways for Capital Region families to spend a summer day and, quite frankly, it is the Giants last physical link to New York State."

The Giants played their home games at Yankee Stadium in Bronx, N.Y. before moving to Giants Stadium in New Jersey in 1976. The Giants are opening a new stadium in New Jersey next year that they will share with the New York Jets.
