DNC's Kaine urges RNC to 'clean house' over controversial presentation
Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Tim Kaine called for firings by his GOP counterpart over a controversial fundraising presentation to party donors.
Kaine called on Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele to fire employees responsible for a presentation which depicted President Barack Obama, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) as caricatures in an "Evil Empire."
"He needs to clean house over there and let some people go, unless he thinks it's fine," Kaine said Friday during an appearance on ABC News's "Top Line" webcast.
Democrats have seized on the presentation, which was first reported by Politico, and demanded an apology for its depiction of party leaders.
Kaine said the presentation was an immature depiction of Democrats, and suggested the presentation, which outlined how "ego-driven" donors could be coaxed into giving money, was insulting to RNC donors.
Steele called the depictions "unfortunate," but it's not clear whether any RNC staff will face repercussions for the presentation.
Update, 1:51 p.m.: RNC spokesman Doug Heye fires back: "The Speaker of the House has called those protesting ObamaCare ‘un-American’ and the House Majority Leader has called Michael Steele ‘slavish.’ If the Democratic National Committee is willing to clean house by calling for Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer to step down, then perhaps we’ll engage their conversation. Until then, the RNC remains focused on winning elections -- as we have done in Massachusetts, New Jersey and Virginia – something that caused former Virginia Gov. Douglas Wilder to call for the Democrats to clean their own house, starting with the DNC."
