Fmr. Rep. Ford: Gov. Paterson should consider resignation

By Tony Romm - 03/07/10 12:42 PM ET

Former Rep. Harold Ford (D-Tenn.) on Sunday suggested embattled New York Gov. David Paterson (D) consider stepping down from his job.

Ford never once issued a direct call for Paterson's prompt resignation during a discussion this weekend on NBC's "Meet the Press." But he did say that Paterson should relinquish his title if he discovers "he can't govern," and he added later he was not sure how, exactly, the governor could continue serving "in this arrangement, in this climate."

"How do you govern in that kind of environment?" asked Ford, who was previously considering a primary campaign against N.Y. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D).

"That's a question he's going to have to answer," Ford continued, adding Paterson's troubles would only further complicate New York's already contentious budget-setting process.

Nevertheless, Ford is not the only Democrat to call on Paterson to resign his post, in connection with the governor's growing list of political and ethics troubles.

More than one-in-three New Yorkers told CNN last week that Paterson should leave host office early, while just slightly under one-third told Marist pollsters similarly.

However, Paterson has repeated he has no plans to heed those calls, though he has already terminated his gubernatorial re-election campaign.

Ford's a fool. I guess that — along with women's right to choose, gay rights, gun control, and a national healtcare program — due process is another thing Harold Ford doesn't believe in.I don't see why TV hosts continue to have this ridiculous piece of work on their programs. He has nothing of interest to contribute. He is — to be kind — not the sharpest kn ife in the drawer.BY jane trahey on 03/07/2010 at 12:06
Once again, a moderator here seems to be censoring comments selectively. Comments critical of Paterson seem to get past the censor but comments critical of Paterson's prosecutor, and political rival, NY Attorney General Cuomo don't seem to be able to make it past the censors. Hmmmm…I wonder why that is? I also wonder why Cuomo is going after his political rival Paterson but Cuomo apparently chose not to pursue the political corruption of Charlie Rangel for his misdeeds with taxable NY income and also real property interests located in NY?BY Phil T on 03/07/2010 at 15:19
The reverse "carpetbagger" ought to keep his thoughts ..uuuh, also not the sharpest tack in the box, to himself.BY SASQUATCH on 03/07/2010 at 15:20
To avoid even the appearance of a conflict of interest, Attorney General Cuomo should have appointed a special prosecutor to pursue this investigation against a political rival for the Democratic gubernatorial spot — instead, it looks an awful lot like Cuomo is engaged in a politically-motivated attack on Paterson. And Cuomo is certainly not above being political — recall his political role as HUD secretary that contributed to the mortgage meltdown.BY Phil T on 03/07/2010 at 15:36
Why is Ford such a hot commodity all of a sudden. He dropped out of the race for the Senate. Could see it is not a good time to be a Democrat, but why is he popping up evrywhere?BY The Mac on 03/07/2010 at 16:55
I disagree with Harold Ford. David Paterson does not need to think about resigning, he needs to RESIGN NOW. It was a known fact that the hard partying David Paterson was a mess in his private life – engaging in extramarital dalliances, past drug use and a penchant for late-night clubbing. Unfortunately, this behavior also characterized Paterson’s professional life. “The Democratic Conference: Organizational and Operational Structure Report” is an eyewitness account of Paterson’s dysfunctional nature while at work. http://www.politico.com/static/PPM110_demreportfinal.htmlThis report heavily criticized Paterson’s leadership as Senator Minority leader. His office, headed by former Paterson chief of staff and childhood friend Michael Jones-Bey, was criticized for patronage, lack of leadership, indecisiveness and infighting, set against a backdrop of general chaos – in other words the office was a zoo. Now doesn’t this chaos sound like his current dysfunctional administration? Not surprisingly, for running such a dysfunctional chaotic office, Mr. Jones-Bey was hand picked by David Paterson to head the Division of Minority Women Owned Business Development (DMWBD) at New York State’s Empire State Development Corporation. Now that’s the Patterson way - being rewarded for your incompetence.BY cleanupnynow on 03/07/2010 at 20:12
Not to be racist, but if he were a white man, would he have been gone by now? I think so.BY John on 03/07/2010 at 23:41
I reaaalllyyyyy want to like Gov. Pat. This whole story is bizarre. But did you hear about THIS yet??http://msofficer.com/2010/03/06/everyone-looks-the-same-to-me-vol-19/TWITTER.COM/MSOFFICERBY MSOFFICER.COM on 03/07/2010 at 23:46
