Pelosi: Dems already see 'sea change' toward support for health reform

Democrats have seen a "sea change" already in support of their healthcare legislation, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Thursday.

Pelosi said that voters' attitudes toward the healthcare legislation that passed through Congress this week, and which was signed into law Tuesday by President Barack Obama, has already begun to improve.

"What we see already is a sea change in attitude that we got the job done," Pelosi said during a conference call organized by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC).

"We passed legislation, and that has made a very big difference in the receptivity of the American people," the speaker added.

Polls have shown split public support for the legislation that made its way through Congress in recent month.s

Republicans have sought to make a campaign issue out of the bill, pledging to try to repeal the bill and replace it with their own health reforms. Obama egged on the GOP on Thursday, saying during a rally in Iowa, "Go for it."

Pelosi said that a number of groups had signed on to help Democrats sell their bill to the public in the months to come, and that members would do their best to explain the bill.

"Our members, in each one of his or her districts, will be communicating that message of what it means to your family and to you.," the speaker said.  "We have pages and pages and pages of support groups. We're calling upon them to reach out into their own communities, as well as helping members spread the word."
