Emanuel: 'I don't blame Republicans' for threats of violence

White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel said Republicans aren't at fault for the reported threats of violence against lawmakers.

Nevertheless, Emanuel said all lawmakers should help ratchet down the rhetoric.

"Every elected official, regardless of where they are on the political spectrum or where they were on the issue of health care, has a responsibility to help calm the waters," Emanuel told Charlie Rose last night.

But "I don't blame the Republicans," he added.

Emanuel did suggest that conservatives encouraged the emotional divide over healthcare by mischaracterizing the bill.

"Part of that is because people talked about death panels," Emanuel said over the public's deep split on healthcare. "People talked about it as being Armageddon. There was rhetoric used that...was more heat than light."
