During Arizona speech, Biden criticizes immigration law
Vice President Joe Biden this weekend traveled to Arizona to speak at a Democratic party dinner, and did not miss a chance to slam the state's controversial new immigration law.
"The law recently signed by your governor is misguided," Biden said. "And I hope it will not stand."
The law has pushed immigration reform near the top of the agenda in Congress. Both sides have wrangled over the timing and scope of a new federal law, with the Senate Democrats releasing a proposal last week.
Brewer said the law was necessary because she says the federal government has failed to act to enforce existing laws.
Biden's words echo the comments of President Barack Obama, who also said it was "misguided" and suggested it could lead to racial profiling.
Opponents say profiling could occur because state police are not specifically trained as immigration officers and could make errors in judgment.
The law came as a response to growing violence on the Mexican border, some of which has spilled over into the U.S.
Biden spoke at the Arizona Democratic Party's annual Heritage Dinner in Phoenix Saturday.
