Labor leader says 'card check' will wait until after healthcare

By Michael O'Brien - 08/24/09 12:16 PM ET
A top labor official said Monday that President Obama and White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel have indicated that they will not bring up "card check" legislation until after healthcare reform is done in Congress.

AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Richard Trumka, the expected incoming president of the influential union, pledged during a web chat on the liberal blog firedoglake that organized labor would work to pass healthcare reform in order to move onto one of its top priorities, the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA).

"The President/and Emanuel have both said they dont intend to bring Employee Free Choice Act up until Health Insurance Reform is done," Trumka wrote on the blog. "Which gives us an additional reason to do Health Insurance Reform now!"

The remarks all but acknowledge that EFCA, one of labor's most prized legislative goals, will take a backseat to the Obama administration's most pressing priority for the meanwhile.

Obama has endorsed the union organizing bill, though he and other senior administration officials have spoken about it much less in public as centrist Democrats in the Senate have been reluctant to fully back the bill.

Republicans, for the most part, have opposed the bill as a threat to businesses.

Trumka also sent a message to allies in the White House and Congress that they expected eventual movement on EFCA, and that it could not be put off indefinitely.

"We WILL PASS EMPLOYEE FREE CHOICE ACT legislation, we will not allow our

If we must have obamacare then all Unions, Federal Government employees, Senators and Congressman must cancel their poliecs and join obamacare.

Our economy is suffering way too much to allow this pro-union (and totally unnecessary) legislation to pass. Labor unions know that they have a product that is unpopular. They are trying to change labor law that has worked since 1935. The law works, it just that unions don't like the results.BY David Dingee on 08/25/2009 at 10:55
The government has done such a poor job of policing Medicard (I do not personally know about Medicaid) and allowed fraud to become rampard that it should clean up its act before trying to advance into health care for everybody. Card Check is another matter and I am glad it has been put off until the heath card issue is settled.BY Richard Alger on 08/25/2009 at 12:14
I meant Medicare rather than Medicaid being fraught with fraud.I do not know personally know about Medicaid but imagine it is also full of fraud. Congress passes bills that cost a lot of money but does not provide for adaquate means of monitoring the bills effectiveness.BY Richard Alger on 08/25/2009 at 12:17
Union membership is good for our economy—union members typically earn higher wages and have better benefits. These advantages allow them to spend more money in our communities which helps local small businesses.

In the midst of this recession (which is mainly the result of corporate greed and poor lending practices) I see union membership as a stabilizing force that protects wages and helps our local economy. Any legislation that helps working people and protects their rights is an important peice of legislation. We definitely need this bill to pass.

Last time I checked wages and benefits have been stagnant for the last thirty years for most workers. Whereas corporate profits have spiralled out of control. How do you expect to retain a middle class without allowing working people to bargain for fair wages and working conditions?BY Ben on 08/26/2009 at 14:09
It's too bad the deathers are already in force here. I'd love to know how many people shouting about government health care happen to love their own Medicare - which happens to BE government healthcare.

We need the Employee Free Choice Act now, to restore balance in our economy and get us out of this slump. Trickle down economics doesn't work - and corporate-driven trickle down is what we have now. Workers need more power to join together and bargain collectively for better wages and benefits. This will help us all.

Wages have been stagnant for 25 years while CEO pay has skyrocketed from 40 times what the average worker makes to 400. We need unions to balance out the scales.BY Julie on 08/26/2009 at 16:54
We need both health care reform and the Employee Free Choice Act. Both are essential to ensuring that we don't lose our middle class, which is struggling to pay massive medical bills on stagnant wages. Trumka is right to back health care reform with a public option, which will ensure that all Americans have access to quality, affordable care. And he is right to back legislation that will let workers decide for themselves whether or not they want a union. Workers should have the choice to join a union and bargain for better wages and benefits - which will benefit our entire country.BY Amanda on 08/26/2009 at 17:58
