Barack Obama's campaign will start airing an ad nationwide on cable TV today hitting John McCain for being unsure of how many homes he owns, after a recent report claiming McCain said as much in an interview.
The ad tells viewers that McCain owns seven houses, while McCain's campaign has said the Arizona Republican owns at least four. PolitiFact looked into the discrepancy and determined that McCain and his wife do own seven, but that Cindy McCain owns most of them.
In addition, the Obama campaign has mobilized supporters to hold events in 15 states to hold events discussing McCain's gaffe.
Touching on other recent economic statements by John McCain--that Americans qualify as rich if they make $5 million per year and that the U.S. economy is fundamentally strong--Barack Obama today had this to say about a report that McCain is unsure of how many homes he owns:
Barack Obama's VP selection won't surprise anyone, and the pick will be geared toward rounding out the Illinois Democrat's candidacy, Democratic strategist James Carville says he thinks. He mentioned Democratic Sens. Joe Biden (Del.) and Evan Bayh (Ind.), and former Sen. Sam Nunn (D-Ga.), as the likely candidates.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is not known to mince words.
And so when Sen. Joe Lieberman (Conn.) informed him this week that he would speak at the Republican National Convention, he told the Independent what he really thought about Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz).
"I told him last night, 'You know, Joe, I can't stand John McCain,'" Reid told the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Lieberman told Reid, "'I know you feel that way.'"
Reid also told the newspaper that he thought Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) may make an unexpected choice as a running mate.
"I think there are other people in the running, and I think we could be surprised," he said.
Reid said he told Obama who not to choose as a running mate, but he wouldn't specify who made that list.
Former colleagues of Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-Ohio) are mourning her death. House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Jim McCrery (La.), the committee's highest ranked Republican, released a statement Thursday on her passing.
"We deeply mourn the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Stephanie Tubbs Jones. She brought a sharp intellect and devoted her heart to her job as a member of this Committee and as a Representative of the people of Ohio
Several Democratic Senate challengers will address the Democratic convention on its third day next week, the convention committee announced last night.
Rep. Tom Allen (Maine), Jeff Merkley of Oregon, former New Hampshire Gov. Jeanne Shaheen, and Rep. Tom Udall (N.M.) will
Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) told his hometown newspaper that Barack Obama should pick a running mate with military experience.
Inouye told the Honolulu Star-Bulletin that Obama should consider Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) or former Sen. Bob Kerrey (D-Neb.). Webb is a veteran of the Vietnam War and a former Secretary of the Navy. Kerrey won the Medal of Honor for his Vietnam service.
Inouye said that Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.), who is reportedly on Obama's short-list, would be "fabulous" because of his knowledge of foreign affairs. But Inouye noted that Biden doesn't have military experience.
Inouye added that it would be a mistake to pick a woman other than Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), whom he supported during the Democratic primaries.
"If it were a woman other than Hillary, her supporters would be very unhappy," Inouye said. "I don't think either Obama or Hillary want that to happen."
Michelle Obama and Cindy McCain both have lines in the new television ad by the anti-poverty group the ONE Campaign.
In the spot, Matt Damon talks about the difference the campaign has made. But instead of Damon's voice, the voices of the candidates' spouses, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg (I) and other celebrities are heard.
McCain says, "but there's still more to do." Obama says, "who are coming together as one."
Barack Obama will appear with purported VP contender and Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine (D) today in Chester, Va. at an economic town hall forum, as Obama completes a two and a half day bus tour through Virginia and North Carolina
Kaine is one of a few reputed short-listers still generating VP buzz among pundits, along with Sens. Joe Biden (D-Del.) and Evan Bayh (D-Ind.).
