McCain Hits Bush Over Climate Change In New Ad

By Walter Alarkon
John McCain's campaign tries to highlight the Republican's call for a cap on greenhouse gas emissions in a new television ad entitled "Global."

The first line in the spot is a direct shot at President Bush: "John McCain stood up to the President and sounded the alarm on global warming ... five years ago."

The campaign said that the ad will play on national cable and in battleground states, though it hasn't specified which states it will air in.

Read the script and watch the spot below.
Script For "Global" (TV:30)

ANNCR: John McCain stood up to the President and sounded the alarm on global warming ... five years ago.

Today, he has a realistic plan that will curb greenhouse gas emissions.

A plan that will help grow our economy and protect our environment.

Reform. Prosperity. Peace. John McCain.

JOHN MCCAIN: I'm John McCain and I approve this message.

Paul Says He Won't Endorse McCain

By Walter Alarkon
Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), who just ended his libertarian-minded presidential bid last week, said that he doesn't plan to endorse either of the major party candidates for president this year.

On CNN Thursday, he first said that he wouldn't back his own party's presidential candidate, John McCain, "unless he changes his views on the war and was interested in the Federal Reserve and all these other things, which is not likely to happen."

Then Paul went further. He said that he has no "immediate plans" to endorse and added that he can't support "somebody that basically disagrees with all the things that I have worked for for the past 30 years."

"But, you know, I just will not be endorsing John McCain, nor do I intend to endorse [Barack] Obama," he said.

He had more praise for former Rep. Bob Barr (Ga.), the former Republican who is now running as the Libertarian Party's nominee.

"I haven't endorsed him, but he's saying the kind of things that, you know, I like to be heard, said, and I hope he does real well," Paul said. "But we also have Chuck Baldwin, who runs on the Constitutional Party. His views are very, very close to mine, and he worked very hard in my campaign. So, for me to pick one over the others is not easy. I hope they both together get a lot of votes."

Paul also said in the interview that he plans to hold a rally with his supporters at the Republican convention. Paul received 29 delegates in Republican caucuses and primaries, the fourth highest total of any candidate. The rally, however, won't be "a slap in the face" to McCain, the congressman said.

"I just hardly ever mention John McCain's name," Paul said. "And I'm sure up there, it will not be an attack on John McCain. It will be a philosophic argument by -- about why we ought to follow our Constitution, follow limited government proposals that we have believed in for so long, get back to balancing the budget, and doing the things that Republicans used to believe in and actually try to practice what we have gone a long way from now."

DNC to File Suit against McCain

By Andy Barr
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) announced Tuesday that it will file suit against John McCain, hoping to compel the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) to investigate the McCain campaign removing itself from public financing.

"John McCain poses as a reformer but when it comes to his own campaign, he thinks the rules apply to everyone but him," DNC Chairman Howard Dean said.

"Taxpayer dollars helped him secure a private loan to keep his campaign afloat, he got free ballot access which saved his campaign money and yet it's clear he doesn't think he needs to stick by the legally binding contract he signed. John McCain is breaking the law and doesn't seem to care."

The DNC filed an FEC complaint against McCain in February. Campaign finance law dictates that if the FEC does not take action on a complaint within 120 days, the party filing the complaint may file suit in district court.

The DNC will file suit in D.C. federal court when those 120 days are up next week.

Obama & McCain Battle over Offshore Drilling

By Andy Barr
Barack Obama blasted John McCain's plan Tuesday to call for a lift of the federal offshore drilling ban.

Obama called lifting the ban, "another example of short-term political posturing from Washington, not the long-term leadership we need to solve our dependence on oil."

The Illinois senator also attacked McCain for "completely" changing his position on offshore drilling. McCain supported the ban when he ran for president in 2000.

In the prepared text of a speech planned for Tuesday, McCain says, "we have untapped oil reserves of at least 21 billion barrels in the United States. But a broad federal moratorium stands in the way of energy exploration and production."

"It is time for the federal government to lift these restrictions." Read more...

Tiger-Watching Thwarted By Storm

By Walter Alarkon
Staffers riveted by the sudden death U.S. Open match between Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate were unpleasantly surprised Monday afternoon when the cable suddenly went out -- just as Woods putted.

The outage initially befuddled the golf fans; one staffer at the House Recording studio noted that NBC was the only channel that was no longer working.

Eva Malecki, spokesperson for the Architect of the Capitol, however, said that it was "storm-related."

Creator of 1964 'Daisy' Ad Dies

By Andy Barr
Tony Schwartz, the creator of the infamous 1964 presidential campaign ad "daisy," died Sunday in Manhattan, according to AP.

Schwartz, who started his career as a graphic designer, made political history with the ad that levied a harsh negative attack on Republican nominee Barry Goldwater without mentioning the Arizona senator's name.

The ad starts with a young girl counting the peddles she pulls off of a daisy and soon transition to a countdown of a nuclear blast.

After the blast President Lyndon B. Johnson's voice comes in. "These are the stakes," Johnson says. "To make a world in which all of god's children can live, or to go into the dark. We must either love each other, or we must die."

After Johnson, another voice says "vote for President Johnson November 3, the stakes are too high for you to stay home."

The ad was pulled, but the message it sent, after months of the Johnson campaign accusing Goldwater of being a war monger, was clear.

Johnson went on to win the election by an overwhelming margin and the spot has been widely credited as the first modern attack ad.

Blogger Raises Money to Retire Clinton's Debt

By Chris Good
Blogger and Georgetown law professor Heidi Feldman says she has raised $6,800 aimed at retiring Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's (D-N.Y.) presidential campaign debt through her blog this month.

Feldman announced the fundraising drive on her blog June 8. Visits to her blog tripled to 2,239 June 11, she said, and have remained around 1,000 daily. Feldman credits the increased traffic to the effort.

The blogger says retiring Clinton's debt would empower the senator and push the Democratic Party toward her ideas.

"I believe that Clinton supporters have a need to refocus their passion and energy," Feldman said in a press release. "Many are not happy with the DNC and do not want to support Obama. If a significant amount of money is raised toward the primary debt, it empowers Clinton to have her positions represented in the Party Platform at the Convention and, hopefully it will prod the DNC to make internal changes."

Clinton entered June with over $30 million in campaign debt, Forbes reported.

Landrieu up Big in Internal Poll

By Chris Good
After a Rasmussen poll indicated a tight race for Sen. Mary Landrieu's (D-La.) seat earlier this month, Landrieu's campaign has released an internal poll showing her up big on her Republican challenger.

The internal poll shows Landrieu up 16 percentage points over Republican John Kennedy, leading him 48 percent to 35 percent. The Mellman group surveyed 600 Louisianans from May 17 to 20 for the poll.

On June 1, Rasmussen released a poll showing Landrieu up by only three points and ahead of Kennedy, 47 percent to 44 percent.

Landrieu's seat has been a targeted by the national Republican Party, as the National Republican Senatorial Committee has attacked her in press releases and web ads (see here and here).

Gore Will Endorse Obama Tonight

By Andy Barr
Former Vice President Al Gore will endorse Barack Obama Monday night at 8:30 p.m. in Detroit.

Gore was one of the biggest remaining names in the Democratic Party yet to endorse and has recently become one of the more mentioned names as a potential Obama vice presidential pick.

In an email to his supporters, Gore wrote, "A few hours from now I will step on stage in Detroit, Michigan to announce my support for Senator Barack Obama."

"Over the past 18 months, Barack Obama has united a movement. He knows change does not come from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue or Capitol Hill. It begins when people stand up and take action," Gore wrote.

"From now through Election Day, I intend to do whatever I can to make sure he is elected President of the United States."
