Republicans must stop playing politics with unemployment benefits (Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand)

By Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) - 10/19/09 12:12 PM ET

More than 7,000 people across the country are losing their unemployment benefits every single day because Republicans are playing politics. Hardworking, middle class families, who are already cutting coupons and squeezing pennies to make ends meet, are now going to have the last strand of the safety net pulled right out from under them, simply because Republicans are obstructing progress.

Last week, the majority of my colleagues and I moved twice to extend unemployment benefits for millions of hardworking Americans who have been laid off and unable to find work in this difficult economy. These are our families, our friends, our neighbors. We all know someone who has been thrown into this situation.

But rather than do what is right, Republicans did what was politically convenient, twice blocking the extension in an effort to derail other economic recovery programs.

This week my colleagues and I will try again to extend the badly needed payments for another 13 weeks. It is my hope that Republicans will drop their obstruction and join with us to extend unemployment benefits to tens of thousands of hardworking Americans.

With almost 14 million people unemployed around the country, the U.S. unemployment rate is approaching 10 percent; right here in New York, it's 8.9% and 10.3% in New York City. Without an extension, tens of thousands of New Yorkers and about a million of our long-term unemployed nationwide will lose benefits by the end of the year. We must not allow this to happen, especially as the holidays approach. As our economic recovery continues to take shape, it's crucial that we not forget about those families who are hurting the most, still struggling to find work in a very difficult job market.

When I travel throughout New York, I speak to many who are struggling. They tell me how hard they are looking for jobs, that there simply aren't any. When there is a job opening, hundreds of applicants show up and line up around the block for a chance to get hired. These are hard working people who would much prefer to work to put food on their table rather than accept a check from the government. But until our economy recovers to a point where it's creating jobs at a sustainable pace, we must step in to help.

Extending unemployment benefits is not only the morally right thing to do, it is good economic policy in a recession. These unemployment benefits not only put money in the hands of those that need it most, but they are immediately stimulative to the economy, as families use the funds for the most critical needs.

So far this year in New York alone, 70,000 people in the Rochester/Finger Lakes region have collected unemployment benefits, 78% of whom relied on those benefits for their basic necessities; in the Hudson Valley region, more than 90,000 collected the benefits, 68% of whom relied on that income for their basic needs; more than 125,000 Long Island residents collected unemployment benefits, 76% of whom relied on that money to support their families; and in New York City, nearly 400,000 people collected unemployment benefits, 67% of whom relied on that money for their basic needs.

The job market is historically the last step of an economic recovery, forcing the unemployed to bear the brunt of the recession the longest and making it increasingly difficult to find new work. It's simply unfair and unreasonable to ask them to bear this burden without assistance, and I hope Republicans will stop obstructing and join us in helping our fellow Americans in their time of need.

We voted these bozo's to represent our nation,,,they have no compasion for the people,,,,it will be up to us to put them in the unemployment line!!BY david on 10/19/2009 at 14:36
This goes to Shannon in GA. I agree the parties need to get this bill passed so people who are in deperate situations can pay their bills. I have friends as well as I that were in this situation not too long ago. While I agree with you, I also know that after the unemployment problem goes away there will still be issues unresolved like the corruption in the white house as well as congress. We need to make sure we are not put in this situation again and vote in better public representatives .BY msb on 10/19/2009 at 14:40
We're doomed. Not only do the Repuboscums not care, but these pigs WANT us to die. Add to this that the Democrats are all talk and nothing else, we're screwed. By the time any extension is passed, if ever, many of us will be on the streets and/or dead. What's more, the Repoubposcums now are loading BS amendments to help their friends — guess the billions of bailput bonuses aren't enough for greedy pigs — and doi9ng everything they can to derail the benefit extension, which costs as much as one week in Iraq/Afghanistan warring. This nation has hit the bottom in terms of greed and corruption. We need to stop talking and take direct action against the pigs.BY Darien Gray on 10/19/2009 at 14:43
I use to be a republican never again! From where I sit they're cold hearted for the unemployed and since I have been without a job for over a year and hear that they are blocking the extension it just makes me sick that I was a republican at one time. I will always vote Demorcratic from now on no matter how bad their idea might be. I hope they all get voted out stupid republicans!BY Mel on 10/19/2009 at 14:50
Thousands of Americans are suffering while the Senate continues to rant on about healthcare. There are people who are hungry and cold!I'm ashamed to be an American today!BY Ruth Pfister on 10/19/2009 at 14:53
I think the republicans should take a flying leep off a short short pear. I will never vote for a rep. again. This is not right, they should be ashame of themselves.BY monorati1405 on 10/19/2009 at 14:53
To the moron bringing up Acorn- This is an article about hundreds of thousands of unemployed americans that are going broke right now. You are an idiot, head over to foxnews.com where you belong.BY JaySin420 on 10/19/2009 at 15:21
"Clean house," I say! Come next mid term election, we, the people, must get rid of these republican "pests", esp. that of Kyl of AZ and that good-for-nothing Hatch! I am very disgusted by these idiotic, gut-less, dispassionate, loud-mouth, idiotic (again) so-called senators. So many are made homeless thanks to their outrageous actions that no wonder the worlds laughs at us and our political shenanigans and fooey. "Vote them out, esp. Kyl Hatch!" I say.BY Fook Seni Toors on 10/19/2009 at 15:24
I am down to my last $15.00 with ½ tank of gas, Mtg due on Nov 1 along with all other utilities.. I am a 61 yr old single woman laid off 1 ½ yrs ago, if it had not been for UE extension I would be homeless already. Try getting a job here in Jax at this age when there are so many available young people, I have No medical, life or dental insurance. looks like I will be one of the homeless by the first of the yr if not sooner.. Hope all you Congress people have a blessed day. Buy Santa a gift from me..with your pay raise…BY Judy in Jax  on 10/19/2009 at 15:30

Stop blaming thepublicans when the democrats have been in control of Congress for nearly 3 years and the president is democrats and the democrats have control of both the senate and Congress.BY Ken H. on 10/19/2009 at 15:54
That the proposed benefits extension is even being debated at all is the most glaring example of Republicans being completely blind to the economic realities faced by millions and millions in this country. All they are interested in is serving special interests that fund their own bellies. Until America returns to a culture of truly serving its people and preserving its own, this country continues on a downward spiral and increasingly loses ability to compete in an ever growing global economy. A government that was FAT for too long, unable to snap out of outmoded thinking. Not unlike the American automotive industry, eh? Fat for so long means blind to changing reality and denial of the forces at play. I am afraid of where this is taking us…BY Kris on 10/19/2009 at 16:10
My unemployment benefits have also expired. My question for Senator Gillibrand is what can we, as American citizens, do to express our opinions to the Republican Senators? I have already emailed Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Assistant Minority Leader Jon Kyl, and I ask all the rest of you amidst your personal crisis situations to do the same. It is very easy to do, just google their websites and email them. I also keep emailing my California state senators and representatives in congress. I hope all of my fellow Americans out there as desperate as I am are actually doing something, voicing your opinions to those not trying to help us. Contact them directly please, not just through blogs they may or may not read. Thank You, and I'm praying for all of us. I can't wait to find another good job, but until I do, I need unemployment benefits extended immediately.BY Shari on 10/19/2009 at 16:15
Even if this passes, it will takes weeks for a new check to show up. How many of us will be past the point of no return at that point? Why did it take so long for the House to address this bill when everyone knew months ago what would happen when benefits ran out? The Republican Senators are playing politics. They don't care about us and the Dems as usual are incompetent but at least they are trying. I hope people lose re-election over this. Our government is so out of touch with the needs of its people. Reid first said this would be passed by both houses by the end of October. The daily stress of being broke and being let down every day as we wait for a vote that never comes is too much. I can't take this any more. They all should be ashamed.BY Steve on 10/19/2009 at 16:19
See what happens when you work hard and pay taxes. You let people with silver and golden spoons in their mouths live off of your efforts and then dictate to you what needs to be done. If our economy is a rat race the American dream is the mouse trap. All of us whom are unemployed are all trapped in an economic mouse trap.BY unemployed pissed on 10/19/2009 at 16:21
Both parties has policitial incorect move, when they try to put blame on other for trying to block benefit extension…Both parties will push people either to become extremist who are very vulernable to riot, or to become uncontrol new debtor who can rob money in the credit card.If the credit card is robbed uncontrol one more time. the Depression 2.0 will fall deep depression, and soon we will have great depression worse than great depression in 1930's. At this time, no system, regulation, or help can do any thing…I'm afraid we are going to revolution!!!Co ngress should take more history class to see the danger ahead. This is very first warning for them…the small leak can break the huge dampBY Mr Don on 10/19/2009 at 16:30
Pass this Billl!!!!!! Just do it!! It makes no sense to keep people suffering. My mortgage is in jeopardy!! Did anyone ever tell you GOP guys NOT TO THINK!!! IT DOESN'T BECOME YOU!!! WHAT DO YA THINK OF THAT!! Think positive folks…its coming!! Let's be thankful now…not later!! jimbo's got heart in LA!!BY James Radkay on 10/19/2009 at 16:39
An amendment should be made for this bill to be retroactive to when the House signed it, since there has been such a long delay. They can figure out where the money to pay for it can come from. The unemployed should also get another stimulus amount, paid weekly, as in the $25 that is now paid, like for a total of $50 per week. The payments in CA are based on a payment schedule that is at least 5 years old, and has not kept up with the times. CA is pretty quick in responding to the extensions, but it will be at least 3 weeks before a check would be received. Senators please keep that in mind and pass it this week!BY JM on 10/19/2009 at 16:54
I sure agree with all the above and I too am in same situation. BUT I wonder what the truth is as to why this articles says Republicans are holding it up? First though the Democrats had the majority???IS it possible that there is other crap economic things thrown in with this? Like most of the time.I would like to know the real truth and hear from some Republicans in office as to why?BY Journe on 10/19/2009 at 17:30
If something doesn't happen soon I may just have to get in my car and run away and leave everything sitting in the house and find somewhere to sleep. There goes another foreclosure. Good luck selling it when the value has dropped to about ½ what is owed against it.. I can't get it refinanced when I don't have a job.BY Judy in Jax on 10/19/2009 at 17:31
