Extending unemployment benefits cannot wait (Sen. Jeanne Shaheen)

By Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) - 10/22/09 12:22 PM ET

For nearly two weeks, I have been working with Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) and many of my fellow Senators to pass the Unemployment Compensation Extension Act to help struggling families across the country. With almost 2 million Americans in danger of losing their benefits by the end of this year, this bill extends unemployment benefits by up to 14 weeks in all 50 states and by an additional six weeks in states with the highest unemployment rates.

This issue should be simple. However, some Senators on the other side of the aisle appear to think that scoring political points is more important than helping working families who are about to have their safety net pulled out from under them.

They’re playing politics while 7,000 workers a day run out of benefits.  These benefits put food on the table, pay the mortgage, and help keep our economy going. This extension will help millions of Americans, and it will stimulate our economy by getting money into the hands of people who will spend it immediately.

Every day I hear from people in New Hampshire and across the country who want to know why the Senate isn’t acting quickly to extend unemployment benefits. They are facing the worst job market since the Great Depression; they are hardworking people who need to take care of their families and pay their bills; they are jobless workers who want to go back to work but cannot find a job. This is about people, not politics. We must act now to do the right thing.

How about getting the president to add troups where needed and not wait or waist time guessing public opinion on that!!!!!!!!!BY JIMSURE on 10/22/2009 at 13:58
I am baffled why this bill, which is obviously 100% stimulus (no one is saving the trifling amount they receive—it's all going straight back into the economy) is being held up by the Republicans.BY Will James on 10/22/2009 at 14:08
I WARN YOU THE PEOPLE WILL REVOLT. IT WILL BE MUCH MORE THAN JUST NOT GETTING RE-ELECTED. WHEN YOU STARVE PEOPLE THEY WILL COME OUT VIOLENTLY AGAINST YOU. MORE AND MORE EVERY DAY FEEL THE SYSTEM IS CORRUPT AND ARE GETTING VERY ANGRY. I HOPE THEY DONT JUST COME OUT BUT I HOPE THEY COME OUT PHYSICALLY AGAINST YOU WHO ARE HOLDING THIS EXTENSION UP WHILE SITTING IN YOU HOME OR OFFICE LIVING OFF OF OUR YEARS AND YEARS OF HARD WORK. I WARN YOU THE DAY IS COMING AND IT IS COMING QUICKLY. WHEN IT DOES IT WILL COME WITH WRATH AND VENGEANCE. OBAMA YOU ARE AS MUCH TO BLAME AS ANY OF THE REST. YOU HAVE DONE NOTHING FOR THE PEOPLE OF AMERICA. JOBS WILL NOT COME AFTER THE ECONOMY IMPROVES. QUIT LISTENING TO THE CROOKED ADVISERS AND LOOK AT WHAT PEOPLE ARE REALLY SAYING. THEY ARE ANGRY AND ARE AT THE BREAKING POINT. 20% UNEMPLOYED. IF THESE 20% COME OUT AND FIGHT YOU IT WILL BE VERY UGLY. I'M TELLING YOU THAT THEY WILL AND IT WON'T BE LONG. AMERICANS ARE MAD AS HELL!BY Jay on 10/22/2009 at 14:08
Thank you Senator. I understand Sen, Harry Reid will be presenting this bill to the Senate today (10/22). Please do not play politics with our lifeline. We are hurting, do not stall on this is issue . We are real Americans trying to survive this catastrophe and move ahead.BY Don on 10/22/2009 at 14:10
thank you senator. there are a lot of us out here who greatly appreciate the innate decency of the democrats on this issue.BY harmon on 10/22/2009 at 14:10
This whole process should have been finished 2 months ago - not started 2 WEEKS ago! People started losing benefits in August, and you guys were on vacation!I told all three of my federal representatives back in July that they needed to get the ball rolling - and NONE of them listened! To say I'm ticked is putting it mildly.BY Jim H on 10/22/2009 at 14:10
This needs to pass. If a man were drowning and you could swim wouldn't you try and save him? And to JIMSURE don't turn this into something else. If you are going to add you voice then add it to the topic at hand, plus it is waste not waist which refers to your pant sizeBY Marc Hester on 10/22/2009 at 14:13
Thank you, Senator Shaheen, for ensuring that benefits are extended for ALL recipients. I believe we will be back here again in 20 weeks, and think benefits should be extended until through 2010, since people on all sides agree that hiring will not turn around until 2011. But you are clearly more in touch with economic realities on "Main Street" than your peers are.BY R Becker on 10/22/2009 at 14:15
