Investment in public transit creates U.S. jobs for new green economy

By William Millar, President, American Public Transportation Association - 10/27/09 03:40 PM ET

Although it has been a part of our lives for more than 150 years, public transportation is one of the key investments to create jobs as we address the new emerging green economy.  With previous research showing public transit’s significant contribution to reducing greenhouse gases, the American Public Transportation Association last week released a report, “Economic Impact of Public Transportation Investment,” that demonstrates how increased investment in public transportation provides good green jobs, wages and business income in industries that have been particularly hit hard by the economic downturn.

The report found that for every $1 billion invested in public transportation capital and operations, an average of 36,000 jobs are supported. These 36,000 jobs result in roughly $3.6 billion of business sales and generate nearly $500 million in federal, state and local tax revenues.

The report also shows that short and long term economic benefits result in the effect that for every $1 invested in public transportation, $4 is generated in economic returns.  While these are national averages, the results vary depending on local conditions and returns and it can be as high as $9 in economic activity for every $1 invested.

Investment in public transit puts Americans back to work in green transportation jobs, boosts the GDP and helps the environment. By investing in public transportation, the U.S. is able to create immediate green jobs and income through the manufacturing, construction and operation of public transit vehicles.  These are the types of jobs needed as we look to green the American economy.

The bottom line is that public transportation investments offer both short and long term benefits to our economy. And if we act now — at a moment when a lot of unemployed Americans are hurting as the job market continues to retract— to include funding for public transportation in the climate change legislation and move quickly on transportation authorization, it can result in the creation and support of millions of jobs over the next six years and beyond.

Legion's estimated unemployment 13.5 % and that is still conservative. This takes into account those whom are no longer counted as unemployed and those working for cash under the table. Green jobs now that is a good joke tell me when may I expect to be hired for one of these good green jobs. We are being led by idiots that think we are dumber then them. In the land of the idiots the halfwit is king, all hail Barack Obama idiot and chief.BY Legion on 10/27/2009 at 21:12
Beware! The "investment" referred to in the above article comes from TAXES. Tax is money government takes from you to spend as it sees fit. It is money you earn but don't get to use in the way you select.BY TaxWatcher on 10/28/2009 at 08:10

Lets to the math ~~1 job costs $145,000 per year.$145000 x 36000 = $5.220 billion(less) money for capital costs for equipment, materials, and consumables like fuelYIKES! The multiplier is greater than 6. Clearly, not a sensible hypothesis.BY RAILROAD MANAGER on 10/28/2009 at 08:44
…and every one of those systems end up being subsidized by the government. So they are not free standing jobs, they're pseuo-government jobs, supported by the tax base. No, thanks. We don't need more of that, we need growth in the private sector. Come up with an idea that doesn't involve the taxpayer and build your own business, instead of off of the backs of the American public.BY JR on 10/28/2009 at 12:50
This is encouraging news. There is no question in my mind that smart investment in sustainability will lead to massive job growth - and we need to do it for all our sakes. There are thousands of companies, white papers and case studies listed at http://www.greencollareconomy.com that are already creating green jobs and the products and solutions we need to make our economy green.BY Kevin Gulley on 10/28/2009 at 14:45
Censored again. Trying again. This time leaving it up to the reader to discover the truth themselves. This is nothing more than a "land grab" as outlined by Agenda 21, which is the program that forms the backbone of the U.N Framework Conference on Climate Change. People like Kevin are soooo clueless. The Conservatives are ineffectually gloomy because they are forever engaged in the CONTENT of all these insidious Bills coming down the pike…while Liberals are swallowing the Utopian propaganda in regards to how the context of these all these Bills. And the politicians and their mouthpieces are just laughing at us both. While the Conservatives while go down kicking and screaming, the Liberals are unwittingly cheering for their own chains. But Agenda 21 and this bull being espoused here is truly bi-partisan, because when the coffin lid shuts…ALL will suffocate together.BY Savant Noir on 10/28/2009 at 23:26

Public Transportation was federally funded to provide an alternative means of transportation that is considerally more "eco friendly" and less polluting insofar as the automobile. In short it was supposed to get people out of their cars. Judged in this light It has failed to take people out of their car. However public transportation is totally necessary and is funded/subsidised by the federal govt. on a 3:1 ratio, meaning for every dollar it raises at the fare box the federal govt. gives it 3 dollars. It is also funded by property tax, a percentage of the sales taxes, bridge tolls and other sources. The report is a fine example of how the American Transportation Association can "Lie with statistics." For some transit companies 90% of the cost of operating a bus, for instance, is the drivers compensation. Buses are bought by Federal "earmarked" grants. However public transportation is a necessary expenditure.BY Leo Marquez on 10/30/2009 at 02:50
