Off-coast drilling threatens Florida economy and jobs (Rep. Kathy Castor)

Scientific research has shown that there are negligible amounts of oil closer to shore but the devastating effects of an oil spill would be enormous to our economy and our environment. Oil drilling off the west coast of Florida simply is not worth the risk.
Interior Secretary Salazar announced today that the new comprehensive energy strategy would protect places ‘too special to drill.’ Florida's west coast beaches and the Florida Keys certainly meet this definition.
I have expressed my concerns about opening Florida’s near-shore waters to drilling to the administration today and relayed the risk to Florida jobs and economic well-being.
