Government still trying to take over health care (Rep. Tom Price)

By Rep. Tom Price (R-Ga.) - 10/30/09 02:02 PM ET

Yesterday, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other House Democrats unveiled H.R. 3962, their latest version of the health care legislation that’s been hotly debated for months in Congress and across the country. (Read it here.)

One thing is clear. Your concerns about a government takeover of health care have been totally ignored by Speaker Pelosi and her allies, who worked behind closed doors to write this bill. After months of debate, the bill they introduced today is essentially the same bill the American people have already flat-out rejected.

Government-run insurance? Still in the bill. Higher taxes? You betcha. An individual mandate that restricts choices and innovation by requiring Washington to define what qualifies as health insurance? Check. A job-killing employer mandate, a budget-busting expansion of the Medicaid entitlement, and countless provisions that set Washington bureaucrats firmly between you and your doctor? Better believe it.

What about comprehensive lawsuit abuse reform and a ban on taxpayer funded abortion? Not surprisingly, those important items are still not in the bill.

There is one major and obvious difference between H.R. 3962 and H.R. 3200, however. At 1,990 pages, the new version is almost twice as long as the old one. H.R. 3962 has all the “government takeover” of H.R. 3200 with an extra thousand pages thrown into the mix. That’s a whole lot of government involved in personal, private health care decisions.

The American people want reforms that provide them with more choices, more competition, more innovation, higher quality, and lower costs. That’s the approach taken by the numerous patient-centered bills introduced by Republicans, including my own Empowering Patients First Act, H.R. 3400. Unfortunately, our ideas have been consistently and intentionally dismissed by the majority party.

But passage of this monstrosity is by no means certain. Though we expect a vote on this bill in the next week, there is still time to make your voice heard. Please forward this email to your friends, family, and co-workers. Get the word out and don’t delay. The future of American health care is in the balance, and we are on the clock.

"Government-run insurance? Still in the bill. Higher taxes? You betcha."^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^Couldn't read any further. Price has been palinized, limbarfed, and becked. Don't you ever get tired of lying tom, or attempting to scare people with your deranged right-wing fringe version of severely tainted "wisdom" and "knowledge".We don't believe you, so STFU.BY nors on 10/30/2009 at 20:41
It's only fitting that this bill rears it's ugly head again in time for Halloween. Just when you think it's dead it comes back again to scare the hell out of us. Nancy Pelosi, I'll bet your real name is Jason.BY R Sobczynski on 10/30/2009 at 21:54
As a reader, I'm insulted by your attempt to relate to me through colloquial language. I understand and appreciate that this is a difficult and complicated issue with a number of solutions - all of which have uncertain consequences in the coming years. We need thoughtful discussion and persuasive arguments from you. Is your posting inflammatory and devoid of new ideas? You betcha.BY ~K! on 10/31/2009 at 14:25
You know what I love about those who wish to control others without a fight? The look of shock on the bullies face when someone clips his jaw. Only in this situation that will be magnified a thousand times over. I would caution those in Washington to think, but thinking no longer goes on inside the beltway. Best of luck with your (lol) healthcare bill and we will see what happens next.BY T1M3K1LL3R on 10/31/2009 at 19:02
Members of the congressional elite, they and their families are governmentally blessed with their very own gold-plated, taxpayer-financed, Washington-run health care system. And, they loooove it!! Red States with Republican Representation in Congress have the greatest number of uninsured. Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Arizona, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. The only way to reduce skyrocketing costs and get everybody covered is through a Medicare-for-all type plan. Activists in California, Colorado, Illinois, Maine, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania want to enact State Single Payer plans, but cannot do so under current law. The Kucinich amendment would grant a waiver of the application of ERISA to a State Single Payer Plan. Call Pelosi, Hoyer, Rangle, Miller, Waxman and tell them to add 'managers amendment' to reinsert 'Kucinich Amendment' that would at least allow States to adopt Medicare-for-all type system??!? If you recall, The "Kucinich Amendment" passed the House Education Labor Committee on July 17 by a RARE bi-partisan 27-19 vote. btw this idea of crossing state lines for competition.. BOGUS!! Insurance companies are EXEMPT from antitrust laws!! 2-companies monopolize national markets.. Wellpoint, UnitedHealth. Guess who authored Sen. Baucus's bill, Liz Fowler, recent former VP of WellPoint!!BY WahSupDoc on 11/01/2009 at 12:52
Hey here's an idea for reform: Instead of making Congress take the same health care they're proposing for American citizens, let's propose that all American citizens get what members of Congress already HAVE… gold-plated, taxpayer-financed, Washington-run health care system and I'm certain all the American citizens under age 65 would loooove it too!!BY WahSupDoc on 11/01/2009 at 12:58
The House and Senate Bills eviscerates Medicare breaking every promise government made to Seniors. So when government takes over the rest of Health Care expect government to break all of the promises Nancy Pelosi made last Thursday to the American people. Pelosi promised: — Lower costs, instead expect Higher costs— Higher quality, instead expect Lower quality, — More Choice, instead expect Less Choice— More competition, instead expect Less CompetitionBott om line, it is impossible to provide quality health care for 30 million more people and at the same time lower costs and increase quality. The reality is the opposite will happen and anyone who says otherwise is a liar.BY mary on 11/01/2009 at 15:01
You know what qualifies as taxable medical devices in the Obama, Pelosi and Reid Health Care Bills? Breast pumps, heart stents, tongue depressors, syringes and tampons. With that list in mind, I can only imagine what else will eventually be included as taxable health care equipment.. Maybe the all the taxes in Obama, Pelosi and Reid’s Health Care Bill will clue the middle class into the fact that one of Obama’s biggest campaign lies is that their taxes won’t go up.. The facts are that when government authoritarian policies get imposed on the “masses” everyone pays and is a loser. Except the elites in DC who have confiscated all our money so they can hand it over to all their special interests groups as they please. Yep… we all are mere slaves of a power hungry elite in DC harking back to the days of King Tut. .BY John on 11/01/2009 at 15:10
The Vote is the only power the 'have-nots' have!! We can only vote out those members who do not act in the public interest. However, it is one's responsibility to seek out 'legitimate' information. Listening to Fox news does not qualify as legitimate news source! 2-simple places to legitimize facts: OpenSecrets and VoteSmart websites. FOLLOW THE MONEY albeit ANY issue. You'll find striking correlation to campaign money received and the way a member of Congress votes. It is in actions and deeds where you'll find truth and logic, not sound-bytes from Rush, Hannity, Beck! Historically, it has been the Democrats who've fought for the working class, not Republicans; study your history! Tax cuts GOP refers to, impact the upper 1%-3% not the bottom 95% as they would imply! MAKE NO MISTAKE, BOTH PARTIES LIKE TO SPEND!! But GOP has spent billions over the last decade; they've borrowed it so it went under the radar of the American people!! Look at the fallout in lieu of GOP control over the past 2-decades??!!? Difference this time, it has affected the wealthiest among us too with Wall STreet meltdown!! Middle class can't sustain the wealtiest now due to high unemployment… what goes around comes around!!BY WahSupDoc on 11/01/2009 at 15:36
Tom Price says that HR 3962 " is essentially the same bill the American people have already flat-out rejected." Does he mean that the many polls that indicate that a majority of Americans support a public option are wrong? He must have forgotten that our support has been increasing for the public option.Poor guy, it looks like the premise for his entire argument is based on his mistaken belief that we don't want real reform.BY dmac on 11/01/2009 at 21:25
