A glimpse at the Pelosi healthcare bill (Rep. John Campbell)

By Rep. John Campbell (R-Calif.) - 11/02/09 10:22 AM ET

Speaker Pelosi and President Obama are determined to socialize medicine and to permanently put 1/6th of the American economy in complete control of the government. But the American people don't want that, not a single elected Republican in Congress wants that, and a significant number of elected Democrats don't want that.

Pelosi needs to get 218 Democrats to vote for her bill. That means she can lose 39 Democrats, but no more. She is keeping Democrats in town "working" because she wants to keep trying to convince them to vote for her bill. She also knows that if they go home, most of them will hear the opposite message from their constituents. So, she keeps us all in town with busy work so that she can keep using carrots and sticks to get the votes for her awful bill. Don't underestimate the power of the Presidency and the Speakership to convince Members of Congress to vote their way.

And just what is in this bill? Well, having had it for only a short time, I can't tell you everything. But here are a few facts you may find interesting:

  • It is 1990 pages long.
  • It has about 400,000 words. That is 5 times the length in words of the Torah.
  • It contains a government-run "option,” which will effectively not be optional over the next 5-8 years.
  • It spends over $1 trillion. That amounts to over $2.2 million per word.
  • It uses the word "shall" 3,429 times. So, 3,429 times it compels someone to do or not do something.
  • But one place where it uses the word "may" is in reference to whether Members of Congress "may" join the government run system. So, much of the public will be forced onto the government-run system but we in Congress will not. (Do what I say, not what I do)
  • It increases taxes on small business, wealthy individuals, all medical devices (including wheelchairs, bandages, and such), people who save for their own health care costs through health savings accounts, payroll taxes and anyone who does not buy health insurance.
  • It authorizes government funding of abortions, which is not allowed under current federal law.
  • Any state that has a limit on attorney's fees or punitive damage awards in malpractice cases (like California) must change that law to remove all limits or the state loses federal money under the bill. (blatant trial lawyer provision)
  • And that's just the beginning.

This week is D-day week for this bill. You will receive updates from me during the week as news progresses.

I sincerely hope that all of us together can persuade at least 40 reasonable Democrats that there are much better ways to reform health care than this monstrosity.

Thank you for your support. Our country can not afford such a bill. Our government needs to wake up. They work for the people and the people do not want complete control by the government. Wanting to pay for abortions, increasing taxes on small business, we need small business to start hiring and get this economy moving in the right direction again. So the govt forces mandated healthcare for all American's. How about mandating the same healthcare for our elected officials?BY Don Nichols on 11/02/2009 at 13:30
In response to the comments above. What is she thinking? Power, power, power — holding on to power. That's the only game in town in DC. As for mandating the same health care for our elected officials. It will never happen. They are not going to give up their "Cadillac" plan, paid for by taxpayers, but we will be taxed on our "Cadillac" plans if we are fortunate enough to have one. Congress exempts itself frequetly from laws the rest of us must follow. That's nothing new. It's been going on for years and years. I just hope the American people will wake up before it's too late. Obamacare and Cap-and-Trade must be defeated. Ponder this quote: "The closest thing to eternal life is a goverment program." Those words of wisdom were offered by Ronald Reagan.BY Rita Camp on 11/02/2009 at 14:21
The Democrats in the House and Senate need to stop drinking the government run socialized health care kool aide and face reality. The reality is government run programs never come in under budget and are unfailingly engulfed in fraud, waste and corruption. Government's track record is always failure when it comes to running anything including Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare, the Post Office and Amtrack that are without exception running in the red and going bankrupt. So expecting a different outcome from the Senate and House's Health Care Reform Bills is pure insanity. Moreover the Senate and House Health Care Reform Bills are filled with thousands of pages of government laws and mandates, 700 billion dollar increases in taxes, an evisceration of Medicare services for Seniors and promises of higher quality health care at lower costs which will inevitable be broken. The bottom line is government can never be counted on to keep their promises of higher quality and lower cost Health Care for all. Just look how the promises to Seniors are being broken by government. The House and Senate Bills eviscerates health care services to Seniors who need health care the most. Likewise the promises that are being made to everyone of lower costs and higher quality health care will also be broken. Why? Because there is no way to realistically pay for them other than eviscerating the services promised to everyone when the costs go out of control as they inevitably will. The real tragedy is that once the leftist Democrats succeed in their goal of destroying the private health care system, only the elite in DC will have the luxury of a "Cadillac" health care system. In conclusion, please do everything in your power to stop the Health Care Reform Bill from becoming law. You can be assured that anyone who votes for this high spending and high tax bill that will destroy our current private health care system (that the majority of people like) and on top of that, increase the cost of health care while lowering it's quality will be voted out of office.BY teresa on 11/02/2009 at 15:29
While our politicians overload us with "content", we Conservatives miss entirely the "context" from which it all flows. Every piece of legislation flows straight out of the "soft-laws' contained within the United Nations Sustainable Development Program/Agenda 21 Program of Implementation. Who wrote Agenda 21? Most of Obama's czars did, and many others as well. Health Care Reform is straight ut Agenda 21. Cap and Trade, straight from Agenda 21. Yet, most of our elected officials are either clueless about Agenda 21,or they continue to engage in ineffectual "content" drive opposition. Ever piece of legislation has it's reason. Why the heavy taxes and dried up grants for medical devices? Because Agenda 21 says that only human beings struggle against the natural birth-life cycles…in other words…"why not have to good moral conscience to simply die". Medical devices that serve to help prolong life will be driven out of market. Medicines and homeopathic drugs that help promote an 'extension of life' will be removed from the market. Just DIE when you are supposed to.Cap and Trade is straight out of Agenda 21. "Private property is deemed 'un-sustainable'." The EPA will make your house your prison. You have to pay the bills and taxes, while they tell you how it must be -retro-fitted, and how you must live within it…UNTIL you can no longer afford to live within it. Then, via eminent domain, it will be swallowed up by the Developers and their Public/Private Partnership with government. Your tax dollars will be used to dig your own grave. How's that for clever? And although Campbell (who happens to be my congressman) , and many other's like him bring us some vital news…it is not EFFECTIVE news. It is in essence meaningless. It is "content". This is why we Conservatives are losing, despite our efforts! There is no point in speaking about a dead leaf…when the tree has root disease!BY Savant Noir on 11/02/2009 at 18:50
Our government is WIDE AWAKE,at least the one's that are complicit in orchestrating this radical transformation of America. Bush 41 signed Agenda 21 in 1992. Bill Clinton, by Executive Order, formed the President's Council on Sustainable Development. The 'inner circle' knows what is going explicitly. Those that are not in the inner circle either just play ball, or are either ignorantly oppositional or ignorantly co-operative. MY experience has shown me that only about 20% of our leaders have much of a clue of Agenda 21…many never even having heard of it before. Put "sustainable development" into your search engine…it will return you 27 million hits. Put Agenda 21 in your search engine…it will return you 58 million hits! If this is a conspiracy, it is the worst kept secret in the history of mankind. While there are those that have spoke of a NWO or the NAU, they were right, but they were also wrong. Yes; Agenda 21 is the program to usher in a Global Governance, but it is no hidden conspiracy. The Rio Earth Summit was the compilation of ideas. Agenda 21 is the program to implement those ideas. The Marrakech Transition Process is the time-table for the implementation of those ideas…and the UNFCCC is the treaty that binds it's signatories to those ideas. Will Obama sign this Treaty? Not likely. He has no need, not at this time. We are already be "processed" and engineered in accordance to Agenda 21…he has no need to tip his hand too soon. The upcoming elections may be the last vote you will ever have…it certainly will be the most important vote of your lives. Vette your candidates thoroughly. They must not only be Constitutionali sts that hold dear the principles and values of our country, but they must also be FULLY cognizant of those forces that seek to destroy us. Agenda 21 is our enemy! If they are clueless about it, then they have no business heralding themselves as candidates that are looking out for us.BY Savant Noir on 11/02/2009 at 19:06
