Pelosi's trillion dollar government takeover of healthcare a bad prescription for America (Rep. Frank Lucas)

By Rep. Frank Lucas (R-Okla.) - 11/06/09 03:16 PM ET

The debate over health care has reached a fevered pitch in our nation's capital.  Over the last several months, millions of Americans have spoken out at town halls, have called and written in to the White House, and have even made personal visits to their members of Congress to express their strong opposition to government run health care.  Yet Speaker Pelosi has once again ignored their voices.

Speaker Pelosi's health care bill H.R. 3962 was drafted without committee hearings or markups behind closed doors by Speaker Pelosi and a very limited number of her inner-circle.  Weighing in at more than 2,000 pages, Pelosi's bill will cost the American taxpayers $1.2 trillion over the next ten years.

Real reform of our health care system is needed.  We must help those who want health insurance but cannot afford it.  We must expand access to health care in rural America.  We must fix our medical malpractice laws so that doctors can focus on saving patients rather than paying lawyers.  And we must expand our investments in preventative care.  However, that doesn't mean we should throw out the car because it has a soft tire.  This country still has the best doctors, the best treatments, the best researches, and the best hospitals in the world.  Improvements need to be made, but not at the cost of potentially destroying our current health care system, saddling our children and grandchildren with trillions of dollars of debt, decreasing our standard of care, and burdening American families and small businesses with $729.5 billion in new taxes.

I will continue to oppose Speaker Pelosi's government run health care legislation and any legislation that comes before Congress that includes a public option.

Right on brother…you got my vote. (Actually, you would if I lived in Okie country). More like-minded congressman need to echo your voice and SHOUT IT LOUD—AND I MEAN LOUDLY— FROM THE ROOFTOPS.BY Vic on 11/06/2009 at 17:46
Why does everyone ignore what the projection is for healthcare expenditures if nothing is done? It's a lot more than the cost of the bill. People, it's going to be spent, with or without government action.BY andreams on 11/06/2009 at 20:39
THANK YOU REP. LUCAS!I cannot understand how Pelosi can continue to ignore the people. Our country is in dire financial trouble. They want to overhaul healthcare without working out the problems systematically and adding help where it is needed only. A government takeover is a scarry idea and will only be the beginning of large government intrusion in our lives. So much government waste. When will this nightmare be over? 2010 I hope.BY Kathi on 11/06/2009 at 21:35
The Democrats are not listening to the majority of the American people. They no longer represent but rule. Their arrogrance, their unabated corruption, their increasing of the deficit, the increasing of insurance premiums, the decreasing of quality care, their covering of illegal immigrants, their corrupt cap tax ideology, their marriage to Goldman Sachs, GE, and Soros all spell ruin. If 2010 doesn't change our countries course, I feel it will lead to real revolt.BY Wary Independent on 11/07/2009 at 02:56
Well, it appears that liberal congress willfully voted against being a part of their own healthcare bill, so they can continue to get healthcare from their private insurers, and dictate gov. healthcare laws separately then themselves. When does writing a blank check on our future wages become acceptable without ensuring that the current system has it's problems solved first? When does it become outside the law, for someone to create a standard and as its creator, not mark the bar for yourself too?BY SI concerned on 11/07/2009 at 04:34
Representative Lucas would have thought frugal, or even Just, when he voted for government paid healthcare for him and his family. When some body sees Him, ask him to explain why government paid health care is good for His family but not for mine.BY Edmond on 11/07/2009 at 07:19
Please continue to oppose this abomination. Essentially all the major things that the President said would not be in the bill are (abortion coverage, coverage for non legals, not tax increase on the middle class, etc.).What about tort reform and where is the provision for like coverage for the members of congress and the senate. What is being created is a ruling class and the rest of us. Also, thank you AARP for throwing seniors under the bus. Sure glad I terminated my membership years ago! Please convince others to vote no! About 70% of us are against this bill and the members of congress know better and are trying desperately to jam it down are throats. How can you be so out of touch? Watch what will happen in 2010. Grass roots opposition is real and growing.BY David A. Pairitz on 11/07/2009 at 08:09
I am just wondering if this bill is so wonderful will Speaker Pelosi's give up her health insurance she has now and buy into the government plan? I think not. It is isn't to sell something if you don't have to be part of it. I dread what this would do for generations to come. We are raising generations of lazy people who feel the goverment owes them a living. Who is paying for it? I for one am getting old and tired.BY By Colleen on 11/07/2009 at 10:16
George Bush spent trillions of dollars in Iraq and got thousands of American soldiers killed. He too gave big corporations tax cut so they could create job in china and india. He also deregulated many fiancial laws that supposed to protecting americans from crooks. We, taxes payers, got NO benefit from ALL of that. He got us in debt… did I see anyone COMPLAIning?"Pelosi's trillion dollar government takeover of healthcare a bad prescription for America" BAD because everyone lives healthy and longer? Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) is right all along that "republicans want you to die quickly if you get sick."BY yellowfish on 11/07/2009 at 10:37
When Bush messed up our economy and outsourced improperly you 'would've' heard complaints if the media had properly covered public opinion, people were concerned policy didn't properly assist American businesses to handle local jobs after creating foreign ones. But here and now, liberals know the medicare system fails 70% more often than private insurance, and each one of them voted against having themselves be included in the bill's coverage forcibly. Is this is about whether someone wants you to die quickly, or whether someone wants more tax money dumped into a failing system, that they can then control AND NOT BE A PART OF? Those in congress who voted to be a part of the bill on the republican side did so because they knew the democratic side would repeat a biased vote count. They wanted to be a part of the system so there was first-hand experience in congress on the matter of reform, without that its just a racketeering ponzi scheme. We all agree the medical system at both an industry and insurance standpoint needs reform, but again it comes to are taxes and unmitigated control necessary, or can fewer policies regulate the whole market properly first?BY S and I Concerned on 11/07/2009 at 16:23
