Let's finish the job on healthcare reform (Rep. Bobby Rush)

By Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.) - 11/08/09 01:08 AM ET

From the days of my youth as a civil rights activist in the 1960s, I have spoken truth to power in many political corridors throughout this nation.  Tonight, as a senior Member of congress, I cast my vote for H.R. 3962 because it goes a long way toward eliminating many of the inequities in our nation’s health care system that I’ve fought against all my life.

Chief among them is the denial of coverage to people, literally, because they are sick or because of what private insurers refer to as a “pre-existing condition.” My vote, tonight, is a vote for the health care needs of every American citizen, regardless of their ability to pay.

As this bill advances to the next stage of the legislative process it does so with the inclusion of several amendments I authored including an expanded discount drug benefit, under the Medicaid 340B Program (H.R. 444), and school grants that support innovative programs that will inspire the next generation of young people to pursue careers in math, science and nutrition, an initiative designed to address our nation’s medical professional shortage.

I also support this bill because, once it becomes law, my collaborative care network amendment will provide immediate assistance for the uninsured and the most vulnerable patients who will still be left out after this reform.  My hope and prayer is that this bill will continue to advance quickly because every day of delay is one day too many for the uninsured. My vote, tonight, was for them.

I see your point on the way your vote was decided. I am just wondering however, how this is going to effect my job and services to American people, as well as my pay and taxes. There are people out there that could hold a job and work, but they choose not to and these people are living off hardworking citizens like myself. I am a registered nurse and we in the healthcare system are very concerned about the ways our jobs will be effected. I feel that this is going to cause more job loss, hunger, and homelessness because of the cost the corporations and businesses will have to fork out. I want to know what President Obama's back up plan is then to save our country if this does not go the way he wants it to. We feel that there maybe alot of disagreements between what regulations will be put on the way our patients are treated and the outcomes they will have because of this. I see the good that you want to do for people and that's great. This is the same way I feel about the way I treat my patients, but I really hope this is not a mistake.BY Melinda Kay Polk on 11/08/2009 at 09:26
It is not a mistake! Insurance companies have been raping and robbing this country for decades, and in a real system they would not exist at all! Single-payer is the ONLY way to go. It works everywhere else in the world, and America is not some "special case" where it cant work. This legislation is a step in the right direction, but it falls far short of single-payer. I say death to the insurance companies. They are thieves, liars, and in my opinion CRIMINALS.BY robert v on 11/08/2009 at 09:58
You sir, were elected to represent many people. You must be aware that there is always that segment of the population that are simply parasites. They refuse to work ,will not put forth the effort to educate themselves,or contribute one dime in taxes. But you think it fair that the middle income workers should pay their way. What is it about this arrangement, that you you see as fair?.How long will it take before there are more loafers than workers?Of course free health care is popular politically.IF you announced tommorrow that the government was handing out free nuclear waste these people would show up in droves. What most people are afraid to utter is that this is a program for minorities.Lets just get it out in the open. But Iam sure you know keeping people dependent is good for your job security?BY sheri on 11/08/2009 at 19:41

MELINDA KAY POLK SPEAK FOR YOUR SELF WHEN YOU AS A NURSE ARE CONCERN ABOUT YOUR JOB PAY AND TAXES OVER YOUR PATIENT WELL BEING! YOU SOUND LIKE A HEARTLESS RADICAL RIGHT CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN WHO MORE CONCERN ABOUT THE WEALTH OF A PATIENT THEN YOUR PATIENT WELL BEING! YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN A PROFESSIONAL LOBBYIST WORKING FOR WALL STREET THEY ARE STILL LOOKING TO HIRE PEOPLE LIKE YOU!BY douglas on 11/08/2009 at 22:32
This is one of the best bills ever written. For one thing it has over 3400 uses of the word shall, now really, could you think of 3400 uses for the word shall? Besides that, the one time ''shall'' was changed in the bill, was to make way for that oh so important word may.Congressional members ''may'' enroll, instead of ''shall'' enroll in the government run option. It would be very hard for me to believe our overly honest members of congress would be looking out for themselves instead of us…BY rick on 11/09/2009 at 04:19
Will be interesting which campaign pitch some of these congressmen will use once they begin their bidding for re-election…People are more in tune now than ever, so it will be a harder sell…Counting the days to Nov. 2010…BY bailedout on 11/09/2009 at 04:44
No sir, your vote was NOT for "them". Your vote was for you. It will not however now save you from the wrath of millions upon millions of American small businesses failing and thereby, more mllions of American people who will be unemployed. Unless Congress CANNOT add and subtract (which seems to be a VERY real proposition), the only other possible reason someone would vote for the house bill is that they are brain dead. Not only will small business be totally gone, you will have the wrath of the baby boomers whose parents are frail and anxious with the cuts you say you are going to make, and then there are the young adults whom you intend to jail if they do not obtain healthcare. You won't get their votes either. And then you have the middle aged business owner or working men/women who are going to be angry, very angry, that you have cut off their ability to reach their goals and the American dream of anyone being successful. And then you are going to have the states that you are pushing further into the red in the middle of a recession (and NO, it's not over), Funny thing is, every single American would have pitched in to help insure the poor. Every single American would have supported insurance company reform of pre-existing conditions. Fact is, Americans en masse would have supported a reasonable and responsible approach, but what they got with this is, plain stupidity. Even the the least educated and most liberal of democrats certainly can see thru the math and the verbage in the bill. The Senate by its very nature thru the constituion is there to smooth out the special interests and radical elements of the House. They WILL do that, or be out of office as well, because there is no doubt if any of this goes thru in this manner, our country will be in the worst depression seen in our country, ever.BY JD Plus on 11/09/2009 at 05:52
Yah, I saw that the End-Of-Life was still in the House bill, maybe you could use it!To bad though, it's DOA in the Senate!BY Yah I saw on 11/09/2009 at 05:55
