The Republican plan to block healthcare reform (Sen. Jeff Merkley)

By Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) - 11/19/09 05:43 PM ET

Last night, we took a huge step forward towards passing health care reform. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid unveiled details of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and the CBO score stating that the bill will reduce the budget deficit by $127 billion dollars over the first 10 years and provide coverage to tens of millions of Americans who are currently uninsured.

The CBO score obliterates the arguments opponents of health care reform have been using for months. They've been claiming the Senate health plan will be a 'costly' government takeover and it will lead to 'delays' and 'denial' of care. For months, the Minority Leader has claimed that Americans will be "forced into a government plan they don't like." These false claims are deplorable scare tactics. The American people deserve better. They deserve the truth.

Truth- The bill will reduce the deficit by $127 billion dollars and brings down health care costs for individuals and businesses.

Truth - This bill will result in health care coverage for 94% of all Americans.

Truth - The bill includes a public option which will create much-needed competition with the private industry and give Americans more choices.

Truth - The bill will ban the egregious practice of insurance companies denying care on the basis of pre-existing conditions and will make it illegal for insurance companies to drop your coverage if you get sick.

Truth - The bill will end arbitrary lifetime limits and unreasonable annual caps that limit care to people who need it the most.

Truth - The health care bill increases patient care by investing in preventive care, wellness programs and helps families grapple with the high cost of long-term care.

Opponents of health care reform are not only peddling lies created by manipulative messengers like Frank Luntz, they're also doing whatever they can to obstruct progress. My colleagues across the aisle are going to use every weapon in their arsenal to block health care. They have no qualms about delaying and stonewalling this critical piece of legislation - after all, they have just spent two weeks blocking a bill providing vital health care services for our veterans. This is shameful.

Members of both parties know this bill will reduce the deficit. They know what a difference this bill could make in the lives of the uninsured and the under-insured. They know that it will help improve the bottom lines of the small businesses on Main Street.

We have a duty to ensure that patients don't have to worry whether they'll be dropped from their coverage if they get sick. Small business owners shouldn't have to break the bank to provide coverage to their employees. And families should not be forced into bankruptcy because of a medical crisis.

Congress has a choice to make. We can provide affordable, accessible health care to Americans, or we can continue with the status quo health care system that leaves millions of Americans behind. Now is the time for members of Congress to engage in real leadership, do what we were elected to do, and allow this bill to the Senate floor for debate.

Senator Merkley, I am not sure how you sleep at night. Shame on you!Your Truth - The bill will reduce the deficit by $127 billion dollars and brings down health care costs for individuals and businesses. My Comment: How much of a reduction would exist, if any, if the health coverage changes began immediately instead of being delayed until 2014 while all the associated tax revenues are scheduled to be implemented IMMEDIATELY? It seems to me you are accumulating 10 years of tax revenues to pay for 5 years of coverage. Your Truth - This bill will result in health care coverage for 94% of all Americans. My Comment: Correction, 93.1%; but aside from that, what about the remaining 20 million Americans who still have NO COVERAGE. So… what problem has this bill solved?Truth - The bill includes a public option which will create much-needed competition with the private industry and give Americans more choices. My Comment: Name me one government entitlement program that has ever come in under buget. Remember Medicare exceeded the 10 year budget projection by over 900 PERCENT… I repeat 900 PERCENT. Allowing private insurance competition at the state level would solve the "much-needed" competition problem.Truth - The bill will ban the egregious practice of insurance companies denying care on the basis of pre-existing conditions and will make it illegal for insurance companies to drop your coverage if you get sick.My Comment: You have my full support!Truth - The bill will end arbitrary lifetime limits and unreasonable annual caps that limit care to people who need it the most.My Comment: You have my full support!Truth - The health care bill increases patient care by investing in preventive care, wellness programs and helps families grapple with the high cost of long-term care.My Comment: Isn't that what the late Senator Kennedy said when he introduced HMO's in the 70's. Also is it not true that the long-term care (CLASS) provisions will result in deficit reductions only in it's early years and then will beginning ADDING TO THE DEFICIT in ever increasing amounts from a point forward making it yet another ponzi scheme no different than Medicare and Social Security? So I say again Senator Merkley, how you sleep at night?BY Connie on 11/19/2009 at 19:10
We need 99 more just like you.Way to go Jeff.BY Karl on 11/19/2009 at 19:42
There are exactly 60 people in this country who believe the CBO numbers for this bill Senator.BY TruthfulTerry on 11/19/2009 at 19:58
Senator Merkley is the real junior senator from Oregon. He was an unknown hack there who flew in on Obama's coat tails. He is simply bending over for Harry Reid. I doubt if he even understands the criticism of the health bill and I can guarantee you he hasn't even read the summary let alone the bill.. He is known here in Oregon as a dim bulb.BY Karl M on 11/19/2009 at 22:21
With all due respect, Mr. Senator: HOGWASH! You may think you've got the American people fooled, but we're not the ignorant peasants you think we are, nor the unwashed masses you'd like us to be. We are Americans. Strong. Independent. Free. Take your best shot, Mr. Senator. Ram this abomination of a Bill down our throats against our will. Watch and SEE where it gets you. We have been "silent" long enough…TOO LONG. But no longer. We're awake NOW, Mr. Senator…and we've got OUR eyes…ON YOU.BY Dusan on 11/19/2009 at 22:22
Merkley your state has health care and I hear they are in financial problems is this your way of putting it on the backs of the other 49 states. I hope you loose the next time you run the people (majority) do not want this job killing, health rationing, senior killing bill. If you want health care bill why don't you let the young people have medical savings accounts at no out of the pocket costs to the tax payers! Why don't you have tort reform that will save billions of dollars. Why because you do not care for the citizens of the country you and your left wing nuts want POWER and you do not care who you hurt to get that power! Why don't you help the unemployed not by given them extensions on unemployment checks but creating jobs like Regan did 21 million real jobs not the fake ones that your administration touts and the media sucks up to you irk! The cost for your jobs is $275,000 per job it said in the paper, let see Regan's job brought double the revenue in to the government from the time he started until he left office. We people are tired of tax and tax and lost of jobs and spending we need term limits to get the crooks out of office such as Frank, Rangel, Waters, Murtha, Boxer, Feinstein, Dodd all either crooks or got there relatives big fat government contracts!BY William on 11/19/2009 at 23:22

I am herefor the seniors, who's only income is Social Security and that have NO OTHER form of income. Many of them will lose their homes next year and the following do to no cost of living increase. they Bailed out the Banks, Mortgage Companies, Failed Businesses, and Crooked CEO's …Please see that they give the seniors their increase in 2010 and 2011. The seniors are not in a recession, they are in a depression…and they need help. I retired early to care for my husband who is disabled and age 68…his medications are expensive and we are in the donut hole…it cost us $240 for just two medications, Novolin 70/30 which is $130 in the donut hole, and Tricor which is $114…either get those pharmacutical companies off the backs of the Elderly. My husband has 12 other meds he takes…we have 80 left to pay for food for the next three weeks..and cannot pay all our monthly bills. SENIORS NEED HELP and I will not resit til they get it.BY Kettle2 on 11/20/2009 at 02:54

To All. We the People! for those of you holding office, the voters you are relying on today and tomorrow are shrinking day by day and month by month. The power you hold today will be gone tomorrow enjoy your fruits of corruption, gree d,deceits and lies that have been told to us days and years! for tomorrow,We the People will vote all of you out who support the health-care and trade and cap bills that will destroy many jobs, and lives and these bills are nothing but a legal way to commit genecide on people who are sick and in need of care. Our seniors will be denied care because the cost will be to great, cancer patients will also be denied do to costs as the list goes on and on so people pray that nothing happens to you that will cost our office holders any money for they would rather see you dead than healthy again. We the People only wanted coverage for ourselves and family members at affordable prices from the insurance companies. Instead we are getting more taxation upon us the people, higher premiums and less coverage.BY freedomfighter2012 on 11/20/2009 at 08:33
